David Argomaniz, a senior at Yuma High School, cleared one of the most competitive scholarship hurdles in the country, advancing to the final interview round of the Gates Scholarship selection process as one of 1,500 students chosen from thousands of applicants nationwide.

The Yuma Union High School District announced the achievement, with Argomaniz acknowledging both the milestone and the road still ahead. "It is a tremendous honor to be selected as one of the 1,500 finalists nationwide, but I know there is still work to be done in this application process," he said.

The Gates Scholarship carries substantial financial weight for recipients. According to the YUHSD press release, those who receive the award get funding to "cover the full cost of attendance not already paid by other financial aid," which can include tuition, fees, books, housing, food and other personal expenses.

Getting to the finalist stage required Argomaniz to write four essays on topics such as leadership, as well as document the leadership and community service activities he participated in. The application draws from a nationwide pool, and reaching the final interview round places him among a small fraction of those who originally applied.

Argomaniz is not the only YUHSD student making noise on the national scholarship circuit this year. Cibola High School student Samantha Chulamorkodt was named a finalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program, placing her among 15,000 students selected from 1.3 million entrants.

Final decisions on Gates Scholarship recipients will be announced on April 20, 2026.
