Yuma's Kelvin Gastelum Eyes UFC 327 Return, Training in Las Vegas
Cibola High School wrestling champ Kelvin Gastelum has been grinding in Las Vegas since January, building toward a UFC 327 middleweight bout against Vicente Luque on April 11 in Miami.

Kelvin Gastelum is set to return to the octagon at UFC 327 in Miami on April 11, stepping back into the spotlight after months of preparation, change, and uncertainty about when his next fight would come. For Yuma, it means a hometown fighter will again compete on one of the sport's biggest stages.
Gastelum has been in Las Vegas since January, fully committing to a new training environment ahead of his first fight of 2026. "I've been grinding…just been out here since January," he said. "I've been getting prepared for a considerable amount of time, just investing a lot of time and making sure I'm ready. Things are going well, and everybody around me is happy with how everything's coming together."
Gastelum steps in to replace Kyle Daukaus, who was originally scheduled to face Vicente Luque at UFC 327. The bout is slated for April 11, 2026, on the preliminary card at middleweight. UFC 327 goes down at the Kaseya Center in Miami. Gastelum says Luque is someone he has built mutual respect with over the years, something that does not always happen in the fight game. "He's a guy I really like and really respect," Gastelum said. "You don't fight guys like that very often." That respect, however, only goes so far. "We've always been friendly, but we've got to put that aside for 15 minutes," he said. "At the end of the day, we've got a job to do. May the best man win."
The preparation heading into this fight carries more weight given what happened the last time Gastelum walked into the octagon. At UFC Fight Night on September 13, 2025, against Dustin Stoltzfus, Gastelum weighed in at 191 pounds, five pounds above the contracted middleweight limit, forcing the bout to proceed at catchweight. He was fined 35 percent of his purse, which was redirected to Stoltzfus. He won the fight by unanimous decision regardless, but the weight issue was impossible to ignore.
The Las Vegas camp represents a deliberate response to that turbulence. That preparation has not just been about physical training; it has also been about adapting to major changes behind the scenes. Gastelum has framed the move as a reset, and his confidence reflects it. "I've been putting in the work, and the results are showing," he said. "Now it's about going out there and performing."
The Yuma roots run deep for the 34-year-old. He won a 5A Division II AIA state wrestling title at Cibola High School before taking his skills to North Idaho College, where he was ranked as high as fifth in the country in NJCAA wrestling as a freshman. He holds a black belt in 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu under Brian Beaumont and trains with Kings MMA and Yuma United MMA. His professional record now stands at 20 wins and 10 losses across 31 bouts, with six knockouts and five submissions among his victories.
The UFC 327 appearance will be his 26th in the promotion. During his tenure, he has been part of several high-profile fights, including a bout against Israel Adesanya for the interim middleweight title, a performance that earned induction into the UFC Hall of Fame Fight Wing for that UFC 236 encounter.
For Gastelum, UFC 327 is not just another fight. It is a chance to prove that this new chapter could be his best yet.
