15 to Brave Polar Plunge at K's Creek for Prairieland United Way
Fifteen people are plunging into an icy pond at K's Creek today to raise money for Prairieland United Way, a push that supports local health and social services.

Fifteen volunteers are taking the Polar Plunge at K's Creek Golf Club today in a bid to raise funds and visibility for Prairieland United Way. The event at 1265 Sandusky Road will split the group so that the top five fundraisers watch from dry land while the remaining 10 will enter the icy pond, part of the nonprofit's broader fundraising campaign.
Organizers say the plunge grew out of a winter fundraising idea that followed a cold-water Dine United challenge. Fundraising campaign co-chair Ryne Turke said the stunt is meant to move Prairieland United Way closer to its $475,000 fundraising goal. Turke said he expects strong community support and emphasized that "every dollar matters." The event is intended both to raise funds and bring the community together.
Prairieland United Way channels donor dollars into local health and human-service programs that serve Morgan County residents. In a county where access to behavioral health, emergency assistance, and basic needs supports can be uneven, pooled fundraising helps smaller agencies maintain services that otherwise face steep funding gaps. The Polar Plunge functions as both a revenue generator and a public reminder of ongoing local needs.
Public health considerations are inherent to this kind of fundraiser. Cold-water immersion attracts attention and donations but also poses risks of cold shock and hypothermia if precautions are not observed. Organizers have stated the plunge is structured as a fundraising event, and residents can expect volunteer safety measures and event supervision at the golf-club pond. The stunt’s visibility aims to drive contributions from a wide array of donors, from individuals to local businesses, toward the United Way campaign.

Beyond the immediate fundraising, the Polar Plunge serves a civic function by fostering cross-sector engagement. Volunteers, donors, and bystanders gathered at K's Creek create a shared moment for the county to show support for neighbors who rely on social services. The event also offers smaller nonprofits a platform to amplify their needs during a winter fundraising season when demand for services typically rises.
As funds from the plunge and the wider campaign roll in, Prairieland United Way will apply donations to agencies addressing health, housing, and emergency assistance in Morgan County. The spectacle of a frozen pond and brave volunteers is meant to translate into steady support for programs that stabilize families and protect public health. For residents, the plunge is a reminder that community resilience depends on collective action and continued financial support as the organization pushes toward its $475,000 goal.
