A 19-year-old man was shot and killed during an unsanctioned car meet in the parking lot of the former Greenspoint Mall, leaving several vehicles abandoned and some riddled with bullet holes. Officers who responded found a large crowd had already dispersed, complicating efforts to identify suspects or witnesses.

At about 1 a.m. Monday, Houston Police Department North Belt Patrol officers answered reports of gunfire near the North Freeway and Greens Road, in the 200 block of Greens Road. HPD Lt. JP Horelica said officers “arrived to find a large crowd gathered for an unauthorized car meet. At some point during the gathering, gunfire broke out, though investigators still don’t know what started it.” The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials later confirmed the victim was 19 years old; no name has been released pending family notification.

Investigators found multiple vehicles left behind as people fled and observed damage consistent with gunfire. The lot showed signs of reckless driving, including tire marks commonly associated with donuts. Detectives are working to determine whether any abandoned vehicles were involved in the shooting or simply left behind during the chaos. HPD reported no gunshot victims in local hospitals tied to the incident.

Authorities have not identified suspects and have no suspect description available. The homicide unit is asking anyone who attended the meet or who has video from the parking lot to come forward. “Anyone with information should contact HPD or Crime Stoppers,” police said. Tips can be directed to HPD Homicide at 713-308-3600 or to Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS (8477), where anonymous tips are accepted. Investigators also requested surveillance footage from nearby businesses that could show vehicles leaving the scene.

The parking lot of the former Greenspoint Mall has been a recurring meeting point for unauthorized car meetups and parking lot takeovers. A homicide detective characterized the gathering, sometimes called “Slab Sunday,” as an event that can draw over 100 people and move between sites across the city. HPD North Belt officers have routinely responded to similar large meetups in the area and have made arrests during past incidents.

For residents and businesses in north Houston, the shooting underscores persistent safety concerns tied to large, unsanctioned gatherings in public parking areas. The abandoned vehicles and visible ballistic damage heighten anxiety about spillover danger to nearby neighborhoods and traffic corridors. Expect HPD to continue processing the scene, reviewing surveillance and media footage, and following up on tips as the homicide investigation proceeds. Community members with video or information can help identify what sparked the gunfire and who was involved.
