67-year-old man killed under private snow-groomer north of Duluth
A 67-year-old man was found trapped beneath a tracked snow-groomer clearing a private driveway in the Twig area of Grand Lake Township and was pronounced dead at the scene.

St. Louis County authorities say a 67-year-old man was found trapped beneath a tracked snow-groomer that was being used to clear a private driveway in the Twig area of Grand Lake Township north of Duluth, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident occurred March 3, 2026, according to the county notice.
The initial county report did not release the victim's name, the exact time 911 was called, or which agency pronounced the death. The report also did not specify whether the groomer was privately owned or who was operating it when the man became trapped. St. Louis County authorities have not yet provided details about whether the victim was performing maintenance, riding in the vehicle, or was otherwise positioned underneath the tracked machine.
Key investigative steps remain pending. Records that would clarify the timeline and cause include the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office incident report, the county medical examiner’s findings and any autopsy or toxicology orders, and the 911 CAD logs and call audio for March 3 in the Twig area. It also is not yet known whether Minnesota OSHA or another state agency will open a workplace safety file related to the groomer or the circumstances on private property.
The Duluth-area death is one of several recent fatal entrapments involving heavy equipment around the country, though those cases are separate events and unrelated to the Grand Lake Township incident. In Coahoma County, Mississippi, 59-year-old Willie Frank Page of Farrell died while replacing a tire on a cotton harvester after the machine slipped off blocks; the Coahoma County Fire Department said, "The Coahoma County Fire Department extends its deepest condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones during this challenging period," and commended first responders. In San Antonio a 52-year-old man was found trapped under a front-end loader at Second Nature Compost after witnesses heard a loud pop and emergency crews performed CPR before he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Other recent examples highlight the range of entrapment hazards. In Cleveland, 48-year-old Joe Cunningham died after being trapped beneath a forklift at a Sherwin-Williams construction site; Laborers Local 310 remembered him as "a dedicated laborer, a proud union man, and someone who showed up each day ready to work hard, shoulder to shoulder with his brothers and sisters," and Sherwin-Williams said, "We share our deepest sympathies with the family, loved ones, and coworkers. Safety remains our highest priority, and we are supporting a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding this incident." In a separate case involving a clothing donation box, Assistant Deputy Chief Danny Garza said responders believed the box closed around the victim and that panic contributed to his death.
For the Grand Lake Township incident, county officials have not announced a timeline for releasing the victim's identity or the cause and manner of death. The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office and the county medical examiner are the primary local agencies that will determine next steps, and public records such as the coroner’s report and 911 logs will be necessary to establish how the tracked groomer became involved in the fatality.
