Amazon expanded Alexa+ into the food delivery space on March 31, rolling out conversational ordering from both Uber Eats and Grubhub for subscribers in the United States. The feature, described by Amazon as similar to "chatting with a waiter at a restaurant or placing an order at a drive-thru," marks one of the most tangible real-world applications of the company's next-generation AI assistant since Alexa+ became broadly available earlier this year.

The integration runs on Echo Show 8 devices and larger, allowing users to browse restaurants by name or cuisine, customize orders mid-conversation, and change their selections before confirming. Once a delivery is placed, customers can check its status by asking "Alexa, where's my food?" rather than switching to a separate app. Setting it up requires linking a Grubhub or Uber Eats account through the Alexa app by navigating to More, then the Alexa+ Store, and finally the Food and Reservations section. After linking, past orders sync automatically, making it easy to reorder a regular meal or start fresh from a new restaurant.

Harshit Agarwal, Head of Uber Eats Product, called the partnership "an exciting step in exploring how conversational experiences can make ordering even easier."

For Amazon Prime members, the Grubhub integration carries an added financial incentive: Prime members can access Grubhub+, which is free with Prime membership, offering zero-dollar delivery fees on eligible orders, lower service fees, and five percent credit back on pickup orders.

Amazon framed the food ordering launch not just as a convenience feature but as a foundational shift in how Alexa+ operates. The company described the update as "the first step toward Alexa+ adjusting its interaction model based on the task you're trying to complete," noting that ordering food requires a different flow than checking the weather or controlling smart home devices. Amazon said it is building toward a version of Alexa+ that automatically adapts its interaction style based on what a user is trying to accomplish, with grocery shopping and travel arrangements cited as areas for future expansion.

Amazon first unveiled Alexa+ in February 2025 but took several months to deliver on its initial promises. The company made Alexa+ available to everyone in the United States as of February 2026, with the service included with an Amazon Prime subscription or available separately for $20 per month.

The launch arrives as conversational AI in food ordering has had a rocky track record at the industry level. McDonald's paused its AI drive-thru initiative in 2024 after missteps that included an AI cashier accidentally adding nine sweet teas to a customer's order, while Taco Bell faced viral videos showcasing its own AI errors. Amazon's bet is that a home device with a linked account and order history provides a more controlled environment than a fast-food drive-thru lane, reducing the friction that tripped up those earlier deployments.

The new ordering feature is rolling out now to Alexa+ subscribers and is currently limited to Echo Show 8 and larger displays.
