Alice High School Boys Powerlifting Claim Team Title at Final Qualifier
Alice High lifter Rene Moreno posted a 1,445-pound total at the Feb. 26 final qualifier, and Alice ISD says the Coyotes claimed the boys team title at that meet.

Alice High School’s boys powerlifting squad claimed the team title at the final qualifying meet, finishing the regular season with top individual performances that the school says positioned the Coyotes for the postseason. State meet records for the event labeled "Alice Boys Last Qualifier" on Feb. 26 show Rene Moreno in the 181-pound class posting a 520-pound squat, a 405-pound bench press and a 520-pound deadlift for a 1,445-pound total that day.
That 1,445 total represented a clear improvement for Moreno from the Mathis Invitational on Feb. 12, where the same meet records list him with a 520/340/500 line for a 1,360 total. Alice ISD’s Powerlifting News page credited the program with “a strong showing” at George West and reported that “every lifter on the team went up in their totals” after the Mathis meet, listing boys placings that include Nikolas Lopez, 1st at 114; Nevyn Moreno, 1st at 198; Amado Ramirez, 2nd at 198; Nick Delbosque, 1st at 308; and Alejandro Villegas, 1st at 181.
Regional context shows stiff competition across the series of meets: the Alice Invitational earlier in February was won by the Mathis Pirates, who finished first overall with 44 team points. Mathis lifters posted meet-best totals, including Clyde Veliz at a 1,675-pound total and Aaron Acosta with a 1,580-pound total from a 590-pound squat, 390-pound bench and 600-pound deadlift, demonstrating the level of opposition Alice faced on the regional circuit.
Alice ISD’s site named Matianna Trevino as the Most Improved Lifter of a recent meet with a 65-pound jump in her total and identified Kloe Fox as another top improver with a 60-pound increase. The school’s girls placements page lists Deidra Chapa as 1st and Best Pound Per Pound Lifter, Mellany Hernandez 1st at 220, Destiny Delarosa 1st in SHW and Mariana Trevino 2nd in SHW, while the boys listings show multiple first-place finishes across weight classes.

Several name and weight-class discrepancies remain between the school roster and statewide meet records. THSPA entries list a Rene Moreno in the 181 class; the school page lists a Nevyn Moreno in the 198 class. Alice ISD also shows both “Matianna Trevino” as Most Improved and “Mariana Trevino” in girls placements. Those inconsistencies require confirmation from the athletic department and the official meet results file to finalize rosters and weight-class assignments.
A social media post circulating on Facebook claims the AHS boys are “4A D2 Regional Champions,” but that assertion is not corroborated by the meet records and school pages available in the public results reviewed here. The THSPA meet-results file for the Feb. 26 "Alice Boys Last Qualifier" contains the most complete published lifts for the final qualifier and should be used to verify team standings, individual totals and any regional advancement.
Alice High’s program mission, posted on the school site, emphasizes the three core lifts—squat, bench press and deadlift—along with character development, safety and perseverance; the recent meet totals and listed placings indicate the program registered significant individual gains and multiple first-place class finishes as the Coyotes head toward the next phase of postseason competition.
