Allendale County Named Host for Smithsonian Americans Exhibition in 2027
Allendale County will host the Smithsonian Americans exhibition Jan 23-Mar 6, 2027, bringing a national exhibit and local programming that could boost education, tourism and partnerships.

Allendale County has been named the host site for the Smithsonian’s traveling exhibition Americans as part of South Carolina Humanities’ Museum on Main Street series. The Allendale County Historical Society, working in partnership with USC Salkehatchie, will present the exhibition in a six-week display from January 23 through March 6, 2027, and will develop complementary local programming and collateral exhibits.
The Americans exhibition examines how American Indian people, histories and images are represented across U.S. culture. Themes range from popular culture imagery and sports mascots to landmark historical events such as the Trail of Tears and Little Bighorn. Across South Carolina, six communities were selected to present the exhibition during the 2026-2027 cycle; each host community will carry the Smithsonian show for six weeks while building local programs tied to the exhibition’s themes.

For Allendale, the selection elevates the Allendale County Historical Society and USC Salkehatchie as lead cultural partners for the period. Hosting a Smithsonian traveling exhibition requires coordination on facilities, security, climate control, insurance and volunteer staffing, and it creates opportunities for local organizations to apply for complementary grants and form new partnerships. The presence of a national exhibition also tends to increase field-trip interest from area schools, draw regional visitors, and create programming that can be integrated into university and county outreach efforts.
The decision carries policy and governance implications for local officials and civic institutions. County and municipal leaders will need to ensure transparent budgeting and clear oversight if public funds or facilities are used to support installation and programming. Elected boards and school administrators should consider how programs align with curriculum goals and whether additional resources will be required to support transportation, staffing and accessibility for community members. The exhibition’s focus on representation and public symbols may also prompt local conversations about sports mascots, public markers and how historical narratives are presented in civic spaces.
Detailed local programming plans are expected to be announced by the Allendale County Historical Society and USC Salkehatchie in 2026. For information or media inquiries about the South Carolina presentations of Americans, contact SC Humanities’ T.J. Wallace at [email protected] or 803-771-2477.
Hosting Americans positions Allendale to expand cultural offerings and attract new partnerships and volunteers. Residents and institutions should watch for the local event schedule and public programs next year as the community prepares to welcome a national exhibition to downtown Allendale.
