Amazon said dark mode was on the way to its Kindle Colorsoft and Kindle Scribe Colorsoft devices, giving its color E Ink lineup a long-missing tool for night reading, eye comfort and accessibility. The update will let those models invert text and background color on the page, while black-and-white Kindle devices continue to use a broader inversion that flips text, images and page color across the full interface.

The change matters because Amazon’s color Kindles launched without the same display behavior already available on monochrome models. Amazon’s product page said Dark Mode was not currently available on the Kindle Colorsoft and would roll out in 2026 through software updates. Until now, Colorsoft users had to rely on a separate Page Color feature, which Amazon distinguishes from Dark Mode on its product pages. That left a clear usability gap for readers who wanted a darker reading view without waiting for a newer device.

Amazon introduced the first Kindle Colorsoft in October 2024 as its first color Kindle, describing the 7-inch display as optimized for reading in color without the glare or harsh light of a conventional backlit screen. The company has said the device can last up to eight weeks on a single USB-C charge, and some configurations include wireless charging. The new dark mode support now brings the Colorsoft closer to the experience long offered on Kindle devices with black-and-white E Ink screens.

The same update also reaches the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft, part of Amazon’s redesigned Kindle Scribe lineup unveiled on April 8, 2026. Amazon said the Kindle Scribe and Kindle Scribe Colorsoft were available to order immediately, while a front-light-free Kindle Scribe would arrive later in 2026. The Scribe Colorsoft uses an 11-inch color display and is aimed at reading, writing and notebooks, extending dark mode support to a larger device built for longer sessions and more varied use.

Amazon has also tied the new color Scribe lineup to software features beyond display controls. The company said the devices include AI reading tools such as Story So Far and Ask This Book, placing the dark mode rollout inside a broader effort to make its color E Ink hardware more practical after launch. For readers who use Kindles late at night, in dim rooms or for extended stretches, the update closes one of the most visible gaps between Amazon’s color devices and its monochrome lineup.
