Anthropic Ends Subscription Credits for Third-Party Tools, Costs Could Surge 5x

Anthropic cut off Claude Max subscribers from applying their $200-per-month plan toward OpenClaw and other third-party "harness" tools, a policy shift that took effect April 4 at 12:00 PM Pacific Time and could push some users' monthly bills past $1,000.

The change strips away a key benefit of the Claude Max subscription: the ability to route AI workloads through open-source platforms like OpenClaw, a self-hosted agent orchestration tool that lets users automate tasks across email, calendar, and Telegram via Claude models including Opus, Sonnet, and Haiku. OpenCode, another open-source integration, faces the same restriction.

Going forward, any Claude usage through these third-party tools must be billed separately through a pay-as-you-go API arrangement. The financial gap is steep. Industry analysis put the equivalent API cost of a workload previously covered by the $200 Max subscription at upward of $1,000 per month, a more than fivefold increase.

The backlash was swift and high-profile. David Heinemeier Hansson, creator of Ruby on Rails and co-founder of 37signals, publicly called the move "very customer hostile," drawing amplified attention to a Hacker News thread where the announcement first spread. The thread, titled "Tell HN: Anthropic no longer allowing Claude Code subscriptions to use OpenClaw," quickly accumulated responses from users frustrated by the abrupt restructuring.

Some affected users did not wait for an Anthropic reversal. One detailed writeup described dismantling a $200-per-month OpenClaw setup and reassembling equivalent functionality for roughly $15 per month using two budget VPS instances paired with Kimi K2.5 as the primary model and MiniMax M2.5 as a fallback, replacing Claude entirely.

Anthropic's customer notification described the policy as "starting with OpenClaw," language that implies additional third-party integrations could face similar billing restrictions down the line. Whether subscribers on Claude Team and Enterprise tiers face the same rules remains unconfirmed; Anthropic has not publicly addressed the question.

Users who want to continue running Claude models through OpenClaw still can, but only through a direct API key tied to usage-based billing rather than a subscription allowance. For heavy users, that distinction now carries a four-figure monthly price tag.
