Arson attack targets Golders Green memorial wall honouring Iran protest victims
A fire was set at a Golders Green memorial wall for Iran protest victims, with CCTV showing liquid used to start it. Volunteers had guarded the site for three months.

A suspected arson attack targeted a memorial wall in Golders Green that honours victims of Iran's crackdown, heightening fears around a site already watched by volunteers for months.
Police said the fire broke out at about 12:15 a.m. on Monday, 27 April 2026, at the wall on Limes Avenue in north London, near a Jewish centre and outside a synagogue. The wall itself was not damaged, but a cabinet beside it suffered fire damage. Officers received the report at about 7:28 p.m. the same day.
Counter-terrorism police are leading the investigation, although officers said the case is not currently being treated as terrorism. No arrests have been made.
The memorial has become a highly charged symbol in a tense local landscape. It is described as a tribute to thousands of protesters killed in a crackdown in Iran in January, and some reporting says part of the wall is dedicated to people killed in the Hamas attack on the Nova music festival in Israel in 2023. A nearby tree has also carried a statement of solidarity with the Jewish community.
Volunteers from the Miga Rally community group, which helped set up the memorial, said they had been providing security there for about three months because they did not feel safe. Ali Vahedi said: “We started security here three months ago because we did not feel safe.” He said the group had already dealt with a drone being spotted the previous week and with people throwing objects such as tomatoes.

CCTV reportedly showed a person using a liquid to try to start the blaze after police initially thought it might have been caused by a candle. Vahedi said the group was “lucky someone saw the fire and stopped it,” underlining how quickly a small blaze at the site could have escalated into a wider confrontation.
The attack came against the backdrop of already elevated anxiety in Golders Green after the arson on 23 March 2026 that destroyed four ambulances belonging to Hatzola, the volunteer-led Jewish community ambulance service. In that case, the London Fire Brigade said multiple cylinders on the vehicles exploded and shattered nearby windows. Two men, aged 47 and 45, were arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life and later released on bail.
The repeated targeting of Jewish-linked spaces in the same area has sharpened security concerns for residents, volunteers and police alike. In Golders Green, a memorial built to honour Iranian dissidents has now become part of a broader contest over intimidation, visibility and the safety of communal life.
