Baker High Hosts Greater Oregon League Boys and Girls Championships Feb. 28

Baker High will host both Greater Oregon League championship games Saturday, Feb. 28, with the girls final scheduled for 4:00 p.m. and the boys final at 6:00 p.m. No season passes of any kind will be valid for the games; ticket prices are $6 for adults and $4 for students (including Baker High students) and seniors 65 and older. “All ticket profits help pay for district events, trophies, scholarships and more, Simon Lamson, BHS athletics and activities director, said.”

Both Bulldogs squads have already clinched berths in the Class 4A state playoffs. The Baker boys secured the regular-season GOL title outright with a 5-1 league mark and stand 12-11 overall; the boys are the two-time defending Class 4A state champions and entered the week ranked 12th in the state. The Oregon School Activities Association noted, “Baker clinched the regular-season title in the 4A Greater Oregon League with a 75-67 home win over La Grande on Friday.”

The Baker girls finished level with La Grande at 5-1 in league play and won the league tiebreaker on total points in their two meetings, outscoring La Grande 119-104 across both games. The girls were listed second in the state rankings as of Monday, Feb. 23, and that standing could preserve a home playoff date even if Baker were to lose the Feb. 28 GOL championship game. Class 4A’s single state-playoff round is set for March 6 for boys and March 7 for girls; winners of the 16 playoff games advance to the state tournament March 12-14 at Forest Grove High School.

Saturday’s opponents for both Baker teams will be set by midweek results. Ontario’s boys and girls teams were scheduled to play at Pendleton on Tuesday, Feb. 24; the winners at Pendleton will then play at La Grande later in the week, and the two teams that win at La Grande will travel to Baker for the Feb. 28 championship doubleheader. With wins Saturday, Baker can ensure home playoff games the following week.

Baker’s regular-season ledger includes multiple home and road wins reflected in season results: the boys swept Ontario and La Grande and split two contests with Pendleton, with MaxPreps listings showing a Feb. 13 home victory over La Grande by a 75-67 margin and earlier wins such as a 1/15 road victory at Pendleton, 76-70. National Today’s Feb. 13 preseason preview laid out the scenarios that governed the Feb. 13 matchups — La Grande entered that night 4-0 in league play and Baker 3-1 before the clinching result.

Fans planning to attend should note ticketing restrictions and prices; proceeds will support district events, trophies and scholarships, Lamson said. Final opponents for the Feb. 28 girls and boys championship games will be confirmed after the Pendleton and La Grande games conclude later this week, with state-playoff dates of March 6 and March 7 immediately following.
