Bear Lake Caregiver Charged After Allegedly Stealing Over $250,000 From Client
A 58-year-old Bear Lake caregiver was charged Feb. 25 after investigators say she took more than $250,000 from an elderly Traverse City client.

Local and state investigators charged a 58-year-old Bear Lake woman Feb. 25 after an investigation found she allegedly took more than $250,000 from an elderly person she was caring for in Traverse City. The woman worked as an in-home caregiver, and authorities say the alleged theft involved the client who lived in Traverse City within Grand Traverse County.
Investigators from both local and state agencies opened the probe after financial irregularities surfaced in the account of the Traverse City client. The investigation led to criminal charges filed against the Bear Lake caregiver on Feb. 25, 2026, with the alleged losses totaling in excess of $250,000. Officials described the client as an elderly person receiving in-home care in Traverse City but have not released further personal details about the victim.
The defendant’s work in-home placed her in a position of trust with the Traverse City client, investigators said, and the alleged taking of funds occurred while she provided caregiving services. The sum alleged to have been taken - more than a quarter-million dollars - is one of the larger theft amounts reported in recent Grand Traverse County elder-care cases, according to the investigators involved in the probe.

The case is now in the hands of prosecutors in Grand Traverse County and will proceed through the county court system following the charges filed Feb. 25. Residents in Traverse City and Bear Lake who use in-home caregivers or manage finances for elderly relatives are being urged to review bank statements, transaction histories, and any power-of-attorney or guardianship arrangements to ensure finances are secure; investigators asked that anyone who notices suspected improper transactions contact local or state investigative authorities.
The charged caregiver’s arrest and the amount involved have renewed local concern over oversight of in-home care arrangements for elderly Grand Traverse County residents. Investigators said they will provide additional information as the prosecution moves forward and as follow-up inquiries into the full scope of the alleged theft continue.
