Bemidji Holds Off Detroit Lakes Behind Clara Bieber's Return
Bemidji senior Clara Bieber returned from a stress fracture and scored 14 off the bench in her second game back as the Lumberjacks beat Detroit Lakes 52-46.

Clara Bieber’s return from a stress fracture in her pelvis gave Bemidji High a late lift as the Lumberjacks held off Detroit Lakes 52-46 in Bemidji. After missing a month and change, the senior came off the bench to lead Bemidji with 14 points in just her second game back.
Bemidji opened the contest with a seemingly comfortable 13-4 lead before Detroit Lakes answered with an 8-2 run that included two 3-pointers to cut the margin to 15-12. Head coach Darin Schultz said, "Every time we would pull away and break it to about 10, they'd come down and they'd hit a 3, it felt like. They kept hanging around, but we continued to be aggressive. We weren't getting the ball to go in early, but our girls stayed aggressive."
The Lumberjack defense emphasized protecting the area inside the arc rather than chasing perimeter shots, a strategy that helped blunt Detroit Lakes’ late attempts to close the gap. The published score strings read "DL 17 29 — 46" and "BHS 23 29 — 52." Detroit Lakes individual scorers were Karlgaard 9, Syvertson 8, Kathrien 6, Sliper 5, Omberg 5, Hoschgraber 4, Smith 2 and Brinkman 2.
Bieber’s impact since returning has been immediate. Bemidji Pioneer noted that "after returning to the lineup last week, Clara Bieber led the team in points with 13," and the Detroit Lakes recap recorded her 14-point outing. Bieber reflected on getting back on the floor: "It feels good to be back on the court," she said. "I'm getting more familiar with it all again." Schultz framed her return in broader team terms: "I can't be more excited for our team to have a player of Clara's caliber back on the court with us," Schultz said. "She really makes us better both on the offensive end and the defensive end. She does a good job taking care of the ball. She, for a time, was one of our leading scorers and one of our leading rebounders. So to get a player like Clara back, it's huge for our team. But I'm also super happy for her as a senior to be able to be back here and able to finish our season and go out on the note that she wants to."
The win adds to a season of uneven section play for Bemidji. Bemidji Pioneer reports the Lumberjacks finished 2-6 against Section 8-4A opponents, with only victories on Nov. 22 against Buffalo and Jan. 13 against Brainerd; Moorhead earlier beat Bemidji 52-47 on Jan. 8. In the Moorhead section matchup, Bemidji went 9-for-13 at the free-throw line in the second half with Bieber accounting for five of those free throws but could not complete a comeback after cutting the lead to 45-39 with just over four minutes left.
Senior leadership has been a constant for Bemidji this season. LPTV noted Bemidji returned seven seniors to varsity and listed Liv Thompson, Ruby McKeon, Anysia Pink, Clara Bieber, Kayce Christiansen, Olivia Birt and Abby Daman as the senior class. Thompson said, "I think we figured out how to work together as a team more, we figured out how to put two halves of basketball together instead of just one, and I think that’s helped us a lot," while Anysia Pink added, "It’s important that we each know our strengths, and that we know when to step up and when to allow others to step up." LPTV also detailed a senior-night move to Bemidji State University with tip-off at 7:15 p.m. after technical issues with the BHS gym hoops.
Lakeland PBS posted highlights and a recap noting Bieber’s return, and coverage across Bemidji Pioneer and St. Cloud Live has tracked Bieber’s scoring streaks this season, including a 17-point game Dec. 13 in a 64-36 win over Sartell when Anysia Pink scored 19. Schultz’s hope that Bieber can finish the season on her terms frames the immediate outlook: with a senior leader back scoring and defending, Bemidji has a clearer path into the final stretch of the season.
