Bernardo Silva Set to Leave Manchester City as Free Agent This Summer
Pepijn Lijnders confirmed Bernardo Silva will leave City as a free agent, hinting at a nine-year farewell with "every good story comes to an end."

After a 4-0 FA Cup demolition of Liverpool, it was Manchester City assistant Pepijn Lijnders who delivered the news City supporters had long dreaded: Bernardo Silva will not be renewing his contract and will depart the Etihad Stadium as a free agent when his deal expires in June.
"Every good story comes to an end," Lijnders told reporters following a game he oversaw from the touchline while head coach Pep Guardiola served a suspension. The line landed as confirmation of what had been widely rumoured for months, and arguably the most candid public acknowledgement of Silva's exit from anyone inside the club.
Lijnders did not hold back in describing what City will lose. "You never replace with the same kind of player — they don't exist," he said. "Bernardo Silva is unique; the way he controls games, the way he moves, the way he receives, the way he leads, the way he sees solutions."
Silva, 31, has been the defining player of Manchester City's dominant era under Guardiola. The Portuguese international joined from AS Monaco for £43 million in 2017 after catching Guardiola's attention during the Champions League knockout rounds. What followed was nine seasons, more than 450 appearances — the most of any player under Guardiola's management — and a trophy haul of around 16 major honours, including six Premier League titles and the Champions League as part of the historic 2022-23 treble.
Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano has since confirmed the departure. Silva's preferred destination is FC Barcelona, a club that attempted to sign him in 2023 but could not meet City's asking price at the time. That failure prompted Silva to extend his contract through 2026. Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain have also been linked, with Silva's desire to return to southern Europe reportedly driven by a wish to be closer to his family, culture, and lifestyle.

Silva was appointed club captain ahead of the 2025-26 season following Kevin De Bruyne's exit, continuing an uncomfortable pattern at the Etihad. Every permanent Manchester City captain since 2023 has ended their tenure by leaving: Ilkay Gündogan departed in 2023, Kyle Walker in 2024, De Bruyne in 2025. Guardiola and Lijnders have routinely described Silva as the "coach on the pitch" and the team's "glue, brains and heartbeat," which makes the farewell feel all the more significant.
When asked directly about his future in recent months, Silva offered only the cryptic reassurance: "I know what I'm going to do." No public confirmation has come from the player himself, but with Romano's report now public and Lijnders effectively confirming the exit on camera, there is little left to speculate about.
City remain in contention for a domestic treble this season, meaning Silva could still add to his medal collection before his final appearance at the Etihad. For a player who arrived as a £43 million signing from Monaco and leaves having won more trophies than almost any midfielder in Premier League history, the manner of his exit, quietly, without fanfare, entirely on his own terms, would suit him perfectly.
