Black Mountain Free Tree Giveaway March 12 to Aid Helene Recovery
Veterans Park will host a free tree giveaway March 12 at 9 a.m., with trees to replace Helene losses and partners including Trout Unlimited, the Truist Charitable Fund and the Arbor Day Foundation.

Veterans Park will host the Town of Black Mountain Parks & Recreation’s Free Community Tree Giveaway on March 12, 2026, beginning at 9:00 a.m. at 10 Veterans Park Dr., Black Mountain, NC 28711, the town announced on its recreation and parks page. The event is free and open to residents who register in advance via the town’s online sign-up.
The town’s posting says, “Register for the tree giveaway event by clicking here!” and repeats, “Come and take home a few FREE trees to help you and your local community recover from the effects of Hurricane Helene. Meet us at Veterans Park in Black Mountain on March 12th, 2026! Location: 10 Veterans Park Dr., Black Mountain, NC 28711.” The announcement identifies Trout Unlimited as a co-sponsor and credits additional support from the Truist Charitable Fund and the Arbor Day Foundation.
Partner groups are bringing broader program capacity to the local effort. According to Trout Unlimited materials, “Trout Unlimited has planted and distributed more than 3,500 trees in areas impacted by Hurricane Helene, and will plant and distribute more than 10,000 additional trees in 2026.” The Arbor Day Foundation notes that “The Arbor Day Foundation’s Community Tree Recovery program, aims to replace trees in communities affected by natural disasters throughout the United States. The program has helped distribute more than 5.3 million trees since its inception in 2005.”
A related volunteer planting is scheduled for March 15, 2026, at the YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly at 84 Blue Ridge Circle, Black Mountain. The YMCA listing asks volunteers to arrive at 11:00 a.m. and says, “Help our partners at YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly and the Black Mountain NC community recover from the impacts of Hurricane Helene by volunteering for a native tree planting on Sunday, March 15 starting at 11 a.m..” The YMCA page adds, “We will be planting native trees to restore areas of the property damaged by the flooding with severe mudslides and other canopy loss along the creeks,” and instructs that “All volunteers are being asked to fill out this online waiver in advance of the event.”

The town page and partner listings do not specify the tree species to be distributed at Veterans Park, any per-household limits on how many trees residents may take home, or a media contact for the event. The registration link is referenced on the town site but no direct URL was provided in the announcement materials reviewed.
These March events follow a Town Instagram notice from September 27, 2025, that said, “On Saturday, September 27, 2025, the Town of Black Mountain will host a Community Tree Giveaway Event to Mark the 1️⃣Year Anniversary of Helene,” indicating a continuity of community recovery actions. Local organizations remain active in related community work as well: the Deck the Trees fundraiser celebrated its 15th year in 2025 to benefit the Swannanoa Valley Christian Ministry Fuel Fund, with more than 50 decorated trees at businesses including Peri Social House, Tyson Furniture Company, White Horse Black Mountain and Town Hardware & General Store.
With Trout Unlimited’s plan to distribute more than 10,000 additional trees in 2026 and backing from the Truist Charitable Fund and the Arbor Day Foundation, Black Mountain’s March 12 giveaway and the March 15 YMCA planting are early steps in a concentrated local effort to replace Helene-damaged canopy and stabilize streambanks.
