Boonville Edges Mount Vernon 39-36 in OT, Reaches Sectional Semifinal
Boonville edged Mount Vernon 39-36 in overtime to reach the Class 3A sectional semifinal, a tense, physical game in which the Pioneers scored just 19 points over the final 20 minutes.

Boonville advanced to the Class 3A sectional semifinal after a tense, physical first-round game with Mount Vernon that required overtime, a low-scoring grind that finished 39-36 in favor of the Pioneers. The victory moved Boonville into the sectional semifinal round.
The game took on a grinding, defensive tone late: Boonville managed only 19 points in the final 20 minutes of regulation, forcing extra time to decide the winner. The first-round recap provided the final score and the overtime result but did not include a full individual box score or a breakdown of overtime scoring.
Earlier this season the teams met in a separate regular-season contest on Feb. 13, 2026, when Boonville escaped with a 54-51 win over Mount Vernon. In that Feb. 13 game Jaxon McKain made all nine of his field-goal attempts to finish with 24 points and three steals, and Mount Vernon's Meyer Robb scored 21 points while Brady Schickel added nine points and seven rebounds.
Through the stretch that included the Feb. 13 meeting, Boonville had compiled a 15-4 record and had won six of seven games, averaging 57.3 points during that run. Mount Vernon entered that regular-season period with an 11-8 mark and a three-game losing streak at the time of the recap.

Boonville's season build-up also included an early hot start in conference play, when the program began the year 4-0 and was the only unbeaten team in the Pocket Athletic Conference a few weeks into the campaign. The program has leaned on a core of upperclassmen, with juniors Cash Willis and Jaxon McKain identified as leaders and Jason Gansman guiding the staff. The program has explicitly targeted postseason success, seeking to end a sectional-title drought that dates back to the 2009-10 season.
McKain is a multi-sport contributor for Boonville. In the football season on Sept. 2, 2025, Mount Vernon beat Boonville 42-22; in that contest McKain completed 15 passes for 181 yards and two touchdowns. That football recap also credited Tyler Klaner with eight receptions for 113 yards and a touchdown and listed Grant Davis as the defensive leader with 12 tackles.
With the 39-36 overtime win, Boonville moves into the Class 3A sectional semifinal and will pursue the program's first sectional crown since 2009-10. The sectional recap did not include a published box score or the semifinal opponent and schedule in its brief result summary.
