Brandon MacFarland, 22, Dies After Van Goes Off Brunswick Route 196 Bridge
Brandon MacFarland, 22, of Sebago, died after his 2023 Ford Transit cargo van drove off the Route 196 on‑ramp bridge toward Route 1 in Brunswick at about 6:49–6:50 p.m.

Brandon MacFarland, 22, of Sebago, Maine, was pronounced dead at the scene after his 2023 Ford Transit cargo van left the roadway on the Route 196 on‑ramp toward Route 1 northbound in Brunswick around 6:49–6:50 p.m. Wednesday. Brunswick Police responded to the crash and confirmed the incident as a single‑vehicle collision.
Brunswick Police said their preliminary investigation found MacFarland’s van “failed to maintain its lane, drove up on an icy embankment, over the barrier, and fell to the ground below.” The department’s Crash Reconstruction Unit opened an ongoing investigation into the circumstances of the crash and into why the vehicle left its lane.
Emergency response at the scene included Topsham Police, the Brunswick Fire Department, the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office and the Maine Department of Transportation, according to responding agencies. The Route 1 onramp toward northbound Route 1 was closed immediately after the crash, and northbound Route 1 was reduced to one lane for several hours while crews worked the scene and investigators collected evidence.
Multiple local outlets and the police report described an icy embankment at the crash site; officials have not concluded whether slick or icy conditions contributed. As NBC Boston noted, “It’s unclear at this time why MacFarland’s van didn’t stay in its lane, or if slick road conditions played any kind of role in the crash.” WGME and other local reports included weather indicators showing snow‑related conditions on their pages the night of the crash.
No criminal charges, arrests or citations have been reported in connection with the incident. Sources did not report any passengers or additional injuries, and there was no mention of transport to a hospital; all accounts state MacFarland was pronounced deceased at the scene. The police release and local coverage did not provide information about an autopsy or toxicology timeline.
Brunswick Police’s Crash Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate the March 4 incident and has not released a final cause. Officials assisting at the scene said they will provide additional details as the probe proceeds; motorists who use the Route 196 on‑ramp and Route 1 should expect that the department will update travel and safety information through official Brunswick Police and MaineDOT channels as new information becomes available.
