Caltrans Crew Finds Apparent Human Remains in Cathedral City Drainage Culvert
A Caltrans crew found apparent human remains in a Date Palm Drive drainage culvert in Cathedral City, prompting an active detectives' investigation and a temporary ramp closure.

A Caltrans maintenance crew inspecting drainage culverts on Date Palm Drive at the Interstate 10 overpass discovered what they believed to be human remains, prompting a Cathedral City Police Department investigation. The discovery, made around 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 10, led patrol officers to secure the scene and the Detective Bureau to take over the probe.
Cathedral City Police posted on social media that “Detectives are on scene investigating a call for service for human remains found near Date Palm and the I-10.” Officers and detectives worked with coroner personnel to process the scene. Commander Jon Enos said the condition of the remains made it impossible to determine an obvious cause of death: “there is no obvious cause of death due to the condition of the remains.”
Investigators recovered a debit card on the person, which provided a potential lead. Enos said, “We have a tentative potential identification from a debit card that was found on the person and so we will wait for positive ID from the Riverside County coroner's office.” A press release also referred to the Riverside County Sheriff's Coroner Bureau as the agency that will confirm positive identification. Neither a confirmed identity nor a cause of death has been released.
Caltrans closed the I-10 eastbound onramp at Date Palm Drive for personnel safety while officers and coroner staff worked the scene. The coroner removed the remains at around 5:30 p.m. and the scene was cleared a short time after, allowing the ramp and local traffic to reopen. Officials have not released further details about the condition of the remains or other items collected, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation.

For residents and commuters, the key immediate impacts were the route disruption while the investigation proceeded and the reminder that routine infrastructure work can intersect with criminal investigations. For the True Crime community and neighbors, this case underscores the importance of local tips and small pieces of evidence - a debit card in this instance - in creating leads for identification and closure. The Cathedral City Police Detective Bureau and the Riverside County coroner's office will release further information as identifications and findings are confirmed.
