Capitals Land Goaltender Jesper Vikman, Two Draft Picks for Nic Dowd
Washington sent Nic Dowd to Vegas and received goaltender Jesper Vikman plus a 2027 third-round pick and a 2029 second-round pick, with Vikman reassigned to Hershey while week-to-week from an injury.

Washington completed a cap-conscious swap March 5, 2026, sending veteran forward Nic Dowd to the Vegas Golden Knights and receiving 23-year-old goaltender Jesper Vikman along with a 2027 third-round pick, originally from San Jose, and a 2029 second-round pick. The transaction was announced by Capitals senior vice president and general manager Chris Patrick: "The Washington Capitals, the National Hockey League affiliate of the Hershey Bears, acquired a second-round pick in the 2029 NHL Draft, a third-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft (originally from San Jose), and goaltender Jesper Vikman from the Vegas Golden Knights for forward Nic Dowd, Washington senior vice president and general manager Chris Patrick announced."
Vikman, who had been with the AHL’s Henderson Silver Knights, has been reassigned to the Hershey Bears and is currently recovering from an injury, the team said, listed as week-to-week. The move immediately addresses Hershey’s goaltending picture while Mitch Gibson is sidelined, and it places Vikman on Hershey’s roster to provide depth behind Clay Stevenson and Garin Bjorklund.

The 6-foot-4, 205-pound Sweden native from Danderyd was a fifth-round pick, 125th overall, by Vegas in the 2020 NHL Draft after the Golden Knights reportedly traded up to select him. This season in the AHL he appeared in 18 games for Henderson and, using the Capitals and AHL figures, posted an 8-7-3 record with a 3.41 goals-against average and an .866 save percentage; at least one national outlet listed his record as 8-7-4 through 18 games while agreeing on the 3.41 GAA and .866 SV%. Vikman’s AHL career totals stand at 16-18-5 in 41 games with a 3.48 GAA, an .880 save percentage and one shutout.
Vikman’s pro resume includes a strong 2024-25 season in the ECHL with the Tahoe Knight Monsters, where he went 24-15-3 with a 3.19 GAA, a .897 save percentage and one shutout in 42 appearances, then posted a 4-4 mark, 2.87 GAA and .914 SV% in the 2025 Kelly Cup Playoffs. His North American path began in 2022 with two seasons in the WHL for the Vancouver Giants, where he went 36-36-3 with a 3.19 GAA and a .903 save percentage and earned BC Division First Team All-Star goaltender honors for 2022-23. Earlier, he rose through AIK’s junior ranks and logged five games in HockeyAllSvenskan.
Beyond the immediate roster patch, the Capitals acquired two draft assets that carry longer term value: the 2027 third-rounder that traces to San Jose and a 2029 second-rounder. The addition of Vikman, a big netminder described in scouting notes as using his size with good lateral movement and upside, gives Hershey a seasoned depth option while Gibson recovers and could hasten Clay Stevenson’s path to steady NHL work. The deal trades a reliable veteran in Dowd for future picks and AHL goaltending depth, changing both Hershey’s day-to-day crease plan and Washington’s asset mix down the stretch.
