Cebuana Lhuillier Signs MOA to Field Gems in PYCL Inaugural Season
Cebuana Lhuillier signed an MOA to field the Cebuana Lhuillier Gems in the Pickle Yard Conference League; roster includes tennis icon Johnny Arcilla and six-player rotation rules.

Cebuana Lhuillier has formalized its entry into the Pickle Yard Conference League by signing a memorandum of agreement to operate a franchise and will field the Cebuana Lhuillier Gems, a roster that lists Johnny Arcilla, Hakim Boloto, Arianne Gajasan, Sofia Nipa, Diana Hughes, Jessy Ysyldjre Lira and Cyrill Dinle Robeniol. The move places a major corporate backer into the PYCL’s inaugural season as the league prepares to open March 7.
Present at the MOA signing were Jean Henri Lhuillier, president and CEO of Cebuana Lhuillier, together with The Pickle Yard Project’s Philip Pagon, chief operations officer; John Talusan, chief executive officer; and Mai Sun, chief of the franchise and development office. Grace Woo is named as team manager and has been tasked with overseeing preparations and coordination for the Gems throughout the season.
The PYCL is described as the country’s first professional pickleball league and will stage a double round-robin regular season totaling 14 matches. League materials state that each team matchup will feature five sets — men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and two mixed doubles events — with all six players rotating every four points; the lineup description does not name the fifth set type in the published match format language.
Key roster-building milestones included a Private Draft at The Pickle Yard SOMO followed by a Public Draft on Feb. 28, and the league schedule runs with an opening on March 7, quarterfinals on April 25–26, and medal games set for May 2–3. The public draft timing and the compressed March-to-May calendar underline the PYCL’s concentrated season model aimed at generating early spectator interest and sponsor visibility.

From a performance standpoint, Johnny Arcilla’s label as a Philippine tennis icon brings a name-recognition advantage and transferable skills to the Gems’ lineup; Arcilla’s court craft and baseline control could complement partners in the men’s doubles and mixed sets under the six-player rotation rule. The rotation every four points rewards depth and frequent substitutions, so players such as Hakim Boloto, Arianne Gajasan and Sofia Nipa will be tasked with delivering short bursts of high-impact play rather than long single-set endurance.
The franchise entry continues Cebuana Lhuillier’s long-standing corporate sponsorship of Philippine sport and aligns with Jean Henri Lhuillier’s broader athletic involvement, including support for softball where he is president of the Amateur Softball Association of the Philippines and backing for tennis. Lhuillier framed the initiative in opportunity terms: “This is more than competition, it’s about expanding opportunities and deepening our impact through sports.” He added, “As pickleball continues to grow, it offers a powerful platform to inspire communities and elevate Filipino talent. Through the Cebuana Lhuillier Gems, we remain committed to helping athletes move forward and reach their full potential.”
The Gems’ debut on March 7 will be an early litmus test of the PYCL’s commercial and competitive model, putting corporate muscle, marquee names and a novel five-set, six-player rotation structure on display as the league seeks to establish a professional circuit for pickleball in the Philippines.
