Chayan Charges to Petaluma Reisling Stakes Win, Boosts Golden Slipper Hopes

Chayan, a filly by I Am Invincible trained by Annabel and Rob Archibald and ridden by champion jockey James McDonald, accelerated clear to win the Group 2 Petaluma Reisling Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick on March 7, 2026 by three lengths, earning part of the $300,000 purse and markedly improving her Golden Slipper credentials. Agrarian Girl (Tassort) finished runner-up and Miss Chanel (Tagaloa) was third, listed either 0.4 lengths or a half-length behind Agrarian Girl in different race reports.

McDonald, who phoned the Archibalds after Chayan's luckless Blue Diamond run to ask where she would race next, said, "She’s a really good filly and I’m grateful that Annabel and Rob put her in the race for me." He added, "They were tossing up whether to run her next week but I was adamant, I’m available for this race please run her here and she justified that." On prospects he said, "I’d love her to go to the Percy Sykes instead of the Golden Slipper but we’ll see how much pull I’ve got."

Annabel Archibald pointed to the filly's development after earlier misfortune, saying, "She had no luck from the draw in the Blue Diamond, she was five-wide all the way." She praised Chayan's temperament and growth: "She is a very tough filly... she has really mentally matured and seems to be getting better with every race." Archibald stressed the practical hurdle of entry stakes, saying, "The Golden Slipper is very wide open this year so a lot will come down to barriers. The main thing is to see Chayan pull up well as she has the prize-money to get into the race now."

The win also sharpened the commercial and strategic picture. Chayan broke her maiden at her third start and, with the Reisling cheque, now sits with sufficient prize-money to claim a place in the $5 million Golden Slipper field if connections elect to accept a start. Order of entry for the Slipper is determined by prize money, restricted events are excluded from that tally, and the race is usually limited to 16 starters plus up to four emergencies. The Reisling is one of five nominated pathway races tied to the Slipper bonus, alongside the Silver Slipper, Sweet Embrace, Skyline and Todman Stakes.

Agrarian Girl’s trainer Bott acknowledged a solid run: "Under the circumstances, Agrarian Girl did very well to hold on for second. Hopefully she has enough prizemoney to get int the Golden Slipper because she will improve off this run." Seven Reisling winners have gone on to win the Golden Slipper, with Estijaab in 2018 the last filly to complete the double, a historical benchmark the Archibalds will now weigh as they decide whether to press into the $5 million target or reroute to the Percy Sykes in the coming weeks.
