Chiefs assistant Eric Bieniemy's wife shot, son arrested in Virginia

Mia Bieniemy was shot Sunday night at the family’s home in Northern Virginia, and Eric Bieniemy’s son was later arrested in connection with the shooting. ESPN identified Mia Bieniemy as 57 and said she was hospitalized after the attack; later reports said she was in stable condition.

Loudoun County Police said someone was being treated for serious injuries, placing the case squarely inside a domestic crisis rather than an isolated public incident. One report said Bieniemy’s son faced three felony counts, a detail that raises the stakes of the case as investigators and prosecutors sort out what happened inside the home.

Eric Bieniemy was in St. Joseph, Missouri, for Chiefs training camp when the shooting occurred. The Kansas City Chiefs’ official bio says Bieniemy was entering his 11th season with the team and his sixth as offensive coordinator, making him one of the franchise’s most familiar coaching figures and a prominent Black assistant coach in the league.

The family had already drawn national attention during the 2020 pandemic, when Bieniemy said he lived in a hotel for the season to reduce COVID-19 risk to a high-risk son. That decision underscored how the household had already been shaped by concern over vulnerability and safety, long before the Virginia shooting put the family back in the spotlight.

The case highlights how violence involving guns can erupt inside homes that otherwise sit far from public view, even in families tied to high-profile employers and major sports organizations.
