CHP and Sheriff's deputies seize drugs, make multiple arrests after traffic stops
CHP found suspected methamphetamine and paraphernalia in two traffic stops; HCSO arrested Michael Thurston and Tinisha Smith and two people in Blue Lake, while one driver evaded deputies.

The California Highway Patrol in Humboldt County and the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office have removed controlled substances from local roads after separate traffic stops and targeted enforcement, resulting in multiple arrests and one outstanding suspect. CHP said officers located drugs suspected to be methamphetamine and related paraphernalia during two separate traffic stops in one week but did not disclose quantities, dates, locations or whether arrests were made.
CHP emphasized the public-safety rationale for the enforcement. “CHP said it remains committed to keeping our roadways and neighborhoods safe, whether through proactive traffic enforcement or by removing dangerous and illegal materials from our streets,” the agency said, and added, “CHP encourages everyone to drive safely, make responsible choices, and help us continue working toward a safer community for all.” CHP also supplied photos tied to the account.
Separately, the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office carried out a saturated enforcement operation at the request of the Hoopa Tribe on Feb. 25, 2026, with activity in Hoopa Valley that extended to Blue Lake. Deputies reported several traffic stops in Hoopa Valley that produced arrests on felony and misdemeanor bench warrants and possession of methamphetamine. In Blue Lake, deputies investigated reports of two suspicious vehicles; an attempted stop of the first vehicle prompted a short pursuit and the driver evaded deputies and remains outstanding.
The Blue Lake stop on the second vehicle produced two arrests for narcotics sales, firearm violations and related offenses, the sheriff’s office said. The release listed enforcement results as one misdemeanor warrant arrest under PC 978.3 cited and released, two drug possession cases and one parole hold. Jasper Edward Tripp, 50, of Arcata, was named in the release and cited and released on a PC 978.3 bench warrant. Sheriff William Honsal framed the operation as part of staffing increases and proactive policing: “The Sheriff’s office has been busy filling their open deputy positions, and we have more deputies out conducting proactive policing. If you are selling dangerous drugs in our community, you will be targeted and held accountable.”

A separate HCSO traffic stop on Dec. 30, 2025 near Salmon Creek Road on northbound Highway 101 illustrates the scale of recent seizures. Deputies deploying K-9 Yahtzee carried out a free-air sniff around 10:30 p.m., and the dog alerted to narcotics. Deputies recovered a significant quantity of suspected fentanyl, methamphetamine, cocaine, Xanax pills, MDMA and other prescription and illicit drugs, along with drug paraphernalia and a digital scale. Driver Michael Thurston, 47, of Rio Dell, and passenger Tinisha Smith, 30, of Fortuna, were arrested and booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility.
Traffic-stop seizures elsewhere show similar enforcement activity in other jurisdictions. A CHP Central Division K-9 stop on Interstate 5 in Stanislaus County uncovered roughly 11 pounds of fentanyl powder with an estimated street value of $1.1 million; that driver was booked on felony possession for sale and transportation charges. In Humboldt County, Nevada, a traffic stop on Grass Valley Road led to a vehicle search that uncovered a large quantity of methamphetamine and a loaded handgun, three arrests and a later Winnemucca home search that recovered an additional 142 grams of methamphetamine.
Local authorities continue to seek information and asked the public to report tips. The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office provided a main line at (707) 445-7251 and a Crime Tip Line at (707) 268-2539. Agencies did not provide lab confirmations or full charging details for all seizures at the time of the releases, and at least one driver remains at large following the Blue Lake pursuit.
