Jonny Clayton produced one of the Premier League season's most dramatic reversals at the Brighton Centre on Thursday, coming from 5-2 down to beat seven-time champion Michael van Gerwen 6-5 in the Night 10 final and return to the top of the 2026 BetMGM standings.

The Welshman, who entered the evening in third place, needed van Gerwen to blink first. The Dutchman obliged, missing four match darts in total at both 5-2 and 5-4 up, and Clayton punished every one of them. He reeled off four consecutive legs to close the match, finishing the deciding leg in style: two 180s before sealing it on double 16. The wildcard pick, returning to the Premier League for the first time since 2023, celebrated a tenth nightly prize of £10,000.

"I thought the game was over," Clayton told Sky Sports. "He missed and gave me a chance. We've got to take chances. The last leg was probably my best of the game but they all count, I'm through, back on top of the table and it's time for Luke Littler to start chasing me again."

The win moved Clayton onto 24 points, three clear of world number one Luke Littler on 21 and four ahead of Gerwyn Price on 19. Van Gerwen, by reaching the final, climbed back into the top four on 16 points. Defending champion Luke Humphries remains in danger in sixth.

Clayton's route to the final was equally impressive. He eliminated Humphries 6-4 in the quarter-final, clinching it with a bullseye finish, before defeating Josh Rock 6-4 in the semi-final. That win over Rock was particularly significant: Rock had beaten Clayton in back-to-back weeks in the two preceding nights. Van Gerwen came through compatriot Gian van Veen in his quarter-final before edging Stephen Bunting 6-5 in a tense semi-final.

The night proved damaging for Clayton's rivals. Littler fell 6-4 to Bunting in the quarter-finals, recording his lowest-ever television average of 83.94 and failing to add a single point to his tally. Price, who had claimed Night 9 in Manchester, was swept aside 6-3 by Rock, who produced a standout 164 checkout on the bull. Humphries, still searching for consistency as the defending champion, lost to Clayton and now sits two places outside the top four.

Clayton reflected on a campaign that has quietly grown into something formidable: "I know what it's like to be here, I've got the experience, I know what it takes to get to Finals Night. I was just looking for two points coming into tonight, anything else was a bonus. So to end the night back in top spot, with another trophy for the cabinet is great."

The 2026 victory is his third of the season, following nightly wins in Glasgow on Night 3 and Nottingham on Night 6. It echoes the form he showed in 2021, when he lifted four major titles including the Premier League, the Masters, the World Series Finals, and the World Grand Prix.

With six nights remaining before the top four advance to Finals Night at The O2 in London on 28th May, Clayton has put the field on notice. The record prize pot stands at £1.25 million, with £350,000 awaiting the overall winner. At this stage of the campaign, Clayton holds every advantage.
