Clooneys evacuate France home as wildfires threaten Provence town

George and Amal Clooney evacuated their home in Brignoles after wildfire flames moved near the town in southeastern France, and George Clooney told Mayor Didier Brémond the family did not know whether the house would survive. Publicist Guido Götz said the evacuation happened because of a wildfire burning nearby.

In a letter to Brémond, George Clooney wrote, "At this point we have no idea whether our beautiful home makes it through this terrible moment," and said he and Amal were "standing with" the town and would "contribute to its rebuilding." The letter also said the couple remained "fully part of this community."

The Clooneys have lived in the area with their twins, Alexander and Ella, who are 9. Brignoles is about 55 miles east of Marseille, placing the family in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur as fires have swept across parts of southern Europe and southern France.

The evacuation came amid a wider stretch of wildfire disruption in France, where authorities later let 84,000 evacuees return home after a major blaze elsewhere in the country. Flames continued to flare in other parts of Europe, underscoring how quickly a single fire can push hundreds or thousands of people out of their homes at once.

George and Amal Clooney moved to France permanently in 2021, and the family was awarded French citizenship in December. Their evacuation has put a familiar face on a crisis that has become increasingly ordinary for residents across fire-prone parts of southern France: leaving home first, then waiting to see what is left when the smoke clears.
