Dark Winds Season 4 Finale Delivers Shocking Death and Cliffhanger Ending
Retired Sheriff Gordo Sena's murder in the Dark Winds Season 4 finale marks the show's first true cliffhanger, leaving his killer unknown ahead of Season 5.

The Season 4 finale of AMC's "Dark Winds" aired Sunday night and delivered something the show had never attempted before: a genuine cliffhanger with no resolution, anchored by the murder of a beloved recurring character and a showcase performance from lead Zahn McClarnon.
The episode resolved its central conflict when Joe Leaphorn, played by McClarnon, escaped from assassin Irene Vaggan's bunker with kidnapped teenager Billie Tsosie. Vaggan, played by Franka Potente, emerged severely burned and demanded Leaphorn kill her; instead, he sent her to prison. He also unraveled Vaggan's plot to have her boss, mobster Dominic McNair, played by Titus Welliver, cleared through false testimony.
Colleagues-turned-lovers Jim Chee, played by Kiowa Gordon, and Bernadette Manuelito, played by Jessica Matten, worked through their issues and Chee's Ghost Sickness with a ceremony attended by all. At the ceremony, Chee's former FBI boss Special Agent Tobias Shaw told him that a desk was waiting at the LA office if he wanted to return. With Manuelito set to be promoted to lieutenant, Chee was left uncertain about whether things between them would remain the same.
In the final moment, Leaphorn received a call relaying shocking news: retired Sheriff Gordo Sena, played by A. Martinez, had been murdered. Gordo was the sheriff of Scarborough County and had often helped Joe through professional and personal crises. Earlier in the episode, the two friends had spoken about retirement, with Sena revealing he still drove out to crack open cold cases and find leads.
The show has now ended on a true cliffhanger for the first time. Past seasons wrapped their most pressing mysteries; this time, fans will have to wait for Season 5 to learn who killed Gordo. The cliffhanger sets up a future mystery with a suspect yet to be revealed, with attention turning to Gordo's wife, played by Linda Hamilton, who was introduced this season and was known to have memory issues. Stars McClarnon, Matten, and Gordon confirmed Hamilton will return in Season 5.
Joe's uncertainty about retirement and Jim's deliberation over the Los Angeles job offer were both put on hold by the tragic phone call, which will carry the story into a fifth season. Dark Winds Season 5 had already been renewed before Season 4 premiered.
The finale cemented what critics noted throughout the season: that "Dark Winds" remains one of the few prestige dramas willing to leave its characters, and its audience, genuinely unsettled at the close of an episode. Gordo Sena's murder doesn't just open a new case. It closes the door on any sense that Leaphorn's retirement was ever truly within reach.
