Dashcam catches overheight truck slamming into New York overpass

Dashcam video captured a tractor trailer slamming into an overpass in South Nyack, Rockland County, sending debris into the southbound lanes of the New York State Thruway before the rig tipped over and skidded on its side. The trailer then hit a Toyota parked on the right shoulder, turning a height violation into a crash that unfolded in seconds on I-87.

The wreck happened at 12:20 p.m. The Toyota driver was taken to a hospital and is expected to survive, while the tractor trailer driver was not injured. Police ticketed the driver for operating a vehicle that exceeded the maximum height, a basic violation that became a far more dangerous collision once the trailer met the overpass.

The South Nyack crash was not an isolated bridge strike on the Thruway. New York State Police later charged a North Carolina man after an investigation into an over-height tractor trailer that struck multiple overpasses along the New York State Thruway in Central New York. That case began at about 1:45 p.m. on March 18, 2026, and added another enforcement action to a growing record of freight trucks hitting fixed infrastructure.
