Denver Steels Phase II Begins Feb. 2; Road Closures Scheduled
The Denver Steels Phase II improvement project begins Feb. 2, 2026, bringing road closures and detours; residents should expect weekday construction impacts and scheduled notifications.

The Los Alamos County Public Works Department, in partnership with the Department of Public Utilities and under contract with Spear D Construction (TLC Company Inc.), announces that the Denver Steels Phase II Improvement Project will begin Monday, Feb. 2. County officials say the work will replace aging pavement and water system components in the Denver Steels area and will require temporary traffic controls.
Project work will include "replacement of roadway, targeted concrete replacement including curb and gutter, valley gutters, sidewalk, drive pads, and ADA improvements." The county also confirmed that "Aging water lines and fire hydrants will also be replaced." Those combined upgrades address both surface and subsurface infrastructure needs that officials say are intended to improve long-term reliability and accessibility.
Traffic and access changes will accompany the construction. "During construction, road closures, lane restrictions, and detours will be in place. Residential access will be maintained." To limit disruptions, the county expects work to follow a regular daytime schedule: "Construction work will occur from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday."
The county emphasized continuity of essential services during the project. "Mail delivery, trash and recycling services, school bus routes, public transit, and emergency vehicle access will not be interrupted." The contractor will also coordinate directly with neighbors: "To minimize disruption, the contractor will notify and coordinate with affected residents for certain construction logistics, utility upgrades, and traffic changes as work progresses." The county added that "The County appreciates the community’s patience and cooperation during construction."

Practical information for residents: expect lane restrictions and detours on weekdays during daytime work hours, and watch for advance notifications from the contractor about temporary driveway or localized access changes. What comes next for residents is straightforward: plan travel and deliveries with the daytime work window in mind, follow posted detour signage when closures are in place, and use the county contact numbers for clarification. The project represents a focused investment in roadway, pedestrian and water infrastructure; residents should expect visible construction activity through the phases and periodic notifications as crews advance specific work zones.
