Duluth Marks 156th Birthday, Officials Discuss Aerial Lift Bridge Future
Mayor Roger Reinert joined Lyric Opera of the North in Duluth City Hall rotunda for the city’s 156th birthday as officials announced the Aerial Lift Bridge overhaul is fully funded at $23.3 million.

Mayor Roger Reinert helped mark Duluth’s 156th birthday in the City Hall rotunda and used the celebration to underscore a major infrastructure milestone: WDIO reports a full $23.3 million overhaul of the Aerial Lift Bridge is now completely funded after a new federal award, with work slated to begin in 2026 and the largest construction scheduled for 2027.
The rotunda event on Friday featured a live performance by Lyric Opera of the North, with the Duluth News Tribune noting the LOON program included a performance of The Elixir of Love. Attendees were treated to cake and cupcakes, and the Tribune reported surprise cameos by Mayor Roger Reinert and Jessica Hehir, the city’s community engagement officer, with photos showing audience members holding plates of birthday cake.
Mayor Reinert framed the birthday gathering as a potential new tradition and was quoted by Fox21online saying, “We’ve never really celebrated the city’s birthday before, but it’s fun opportunity to get people together in the rotunda have a little birthday cake,” said Mayor Reinert. Fox21 further reported Reinert expressed hope the celebration will become a city tradition.
Officials used the celebratory setting to highlight the bridge project and its role in Duluth’s economy and tourism. WDIO reported the overhaul will replace the road deck and sidewalks, reinforce the structure from top to bottom, and keep traffic and shipping moving safely. WDIO quoted Reinert at length on the bridge’s function: “People think of the lift bridge as an iconic picture backdrop but it’s actually an important maritime connection. With the canal and shipping to the largest port on the Great Lakes, one of the largest ports in the country and an important transportation connection for residents,” said Duluth Mayor Roger Reinert. " It’s also important for our visitors. A significant number of Duluth’s 7 million annual visitors go over the lift bridge out to Park Point to visit the beaches and the amenities there.

Visual observances capped the day: Duluth News Tribune, Northern News Now and WDIO reported Enger Tower and the Aerial Lift Bridge were scheduled to be lit in the colors of the Duluth city flag, blue, green, and white, Friday evening. Fox21online listed green and blue only, making it an outlier among the accounts; city flag colors and the three-color description are corroborated by multiple outlets.
The birthday observance highlighted Duluth’s layered municipal history as well as current investment. Duluth first officially became a city on March 6, 1870, the Duluth News Tribune notes, though the city lost that status in 1877 and later regained it on March 2, 1887; March 6 remains the most widely recognized anniversary. With a fully funded $23.3 million plan and major construction scheduled for 2027, city leaders are positioning the Lift Bridge project as both a functional upgrade for the largest port on the Great Lakes and a preserver of a landmark that draws visitors across to Park Point.
