Equibase Sees Canaletto as High-Potential Contender in Tampa Bay Derby
Equibase pins Canaletto as a colt with "high potential" and physical upside for the Grade 3, $400,000 Tampa Bay Derby at Tampa Bay Downs on March 7, 2026.

Equibase singled out Canaletto as a colt with “high potential” and physical upside as the Road to the Kentucky Derby arrives at Tampa Bay Downs for the Grade 3, $400,000 Tampa Bay Derby, listed as Race 12 with a 6:05 PM ET post time on March 7th, 2026. The race is billed on the Equibase event page with Entries Plus and wagering options including Exacta, Trifecta, Superfecta and Super High 5.
AmericasBestRacing reinforced Equibase’s note by pointing to Canaletto’s lone race on his resume, calling it a "runaway win" and providing hard numbers that separate him from the field. Canaletto "earned a 94 Equibase Speed Figure, which is the highest last out speed figure of any horse entered in the Tampa Bay Derby." ABR adds that "Canaletto finished the final furlong in :12.32, which was nearly a second faster than any other horse in the field."
ABR also placed Canaletto in a statistical context that matters for graded stakes handicapping. "Horses in dirt route graded stakes races with the highest last out Equibase Speed Figure win at 32% from 297 starts over the past year," ABR reports, "with that win percentage jumping to 45% when looking at just the past month." Those rates make Canaletto’s 94 ESF a substantial credential for a colt with only one start.

The full nine-horse field collated from Equibase and ABR includes Canaletto (Into Mischief - Distorted Music, by Distorted Humor), Further Ado (Gun Runner - Sky Dreamer, by Sky Mesa), Powershift (Constitution - Free Flying Soul, by Quiet American), Hulkamania (McKinzie - Paris Amour, by Frosted), Thunder Buck (Gun Runner - Oxy Lady, by Oxbow), and The Puma (Essential Quality - Eve of War, by Declaration of War), plus Redland Rebels, Talkin and Roger That Dana. ABR’s listing of comparative best Equibase Speed Figures shows The Puma at 90, Redland Rebels 88, Talkin 88, Thunder Buck 86, Roger That Dana 82 and Hulkamania 76.
Handicappers will note ABR’s preference order: Canaletto, Further Ado, Powershift. Equibase’s entry snippets include a fragmented row showing Canaletto as "9 | 9 | Canaletto (KY") with "F Prat | 122 | C C Brown | 5/2" in a Tampa Bay Downs MAIDEN SPECIAL WEIGHT fragment; that jockey, weight, trainer and 5/2 figure appear in the preserved Equibase text though the chart context in the snippet is fragmentary.

Notable biomechanics detail from ABR: "Notably, he increased his average stride length in the final furlong by over half a foot compared with the penultimate furlong, suggesting this promising colt will have no issue stretching out an additional sixteenth of a mile for [...]" That truncated line and several other source fragments should be confirmed with full Equibase and ABR copy, but the available data point to Canaletto as the leading high-upside candidate in a nine-horse, $400,000 Tampa Bay Derby field headed to Tampa Bay Downs on March 7th.
