Farmington Scorpions' Six-Game Win Streak Snapped by Hobbs 70-43
Farmington's six-game win streak was snapped by Hobbs, 70-43, in Moriarty; the result reshuffles momentum for District 1-5A play starting this week.
Hobbs High ran away from Farmington early and never looked back, handing the Scorpions a 70-43 loss Friday night in Moriarty and ending Farmington's six-game winning streak. The lopsided outcome has immediate consequences as both teams shift focus to District 1-5A competition that begins this week.
The Eagles set the tone with a 9-0 run midway through the first quarter and led from wire to wire, building a 38-20 advantage by halftime. Hobbs closed the night with four players in double figures: junior Kacelynn Muniez had 20 points, eighth-grader Xoey Ross added 19, senior Matysen Zepeda scored 14, and senior Aliana Armitage contributed 10. Muniez hit two of her six three-point attempts in the opening quarter as Hobbs applied pressure on both ends.
Farmington struggled to find perimeter rhythm and could not generate second-chance opportunities, a combination that blunted the Scorpions' usual offensive flow. Senior Kjani Anitielu led Farmington with 25 points, while Caris Dale had five and Carly Conley scored four. The Scorpions were outscored 32-23 over the final two quarters and fell to 14-2 on the season; Hobbs improved to 17-2 and extended its own winning streak to eight games.
Hobbs enters district play on a roll. Since losing to Farmington 65-62 on Dec. 31 in the Hobbs Holiday Classic championship game, the Eagles captured the Albuquerque Public Schools Metro Tournament, including a 68-63 win over top-ranked Class 4A Kirtland Central and a 56-45 victory over Albuquerque High in the title game. That run provides Hobbs with both confidence and a deeper bench rotation as the stakes shift to district standings.

Farmington coach Tom Adair did not downplay the setback. "We got whipped," he said. "We’ve just got to put it behind us and go beat Rio Rancho. District season means we’re all 0-0."
For local fans and the San Juan County basketball scene, the result resets narratives heading into District 1-5A. Farmington will open district play Tuesday at Rio Rancho and return home Thursday to Scorpion Arena to host Cleveland. The Scorpions must regroup quickly to preserve positioning for postseason seeding, while Hobbs will look to carry its balanced scoring and tournament momentum into the district race.
