Former Aide Accuses Swalwell of Sexual Assault, Prompting Staff Resignations

Rep. Eric Swalwell's campaign for California governor began fracturing Friday after a former staffer publicly accused him of sexually assaulting her on two occasions when she was too intoxicated to consent, triggering staff resignations, surrogate defections, and the suspension of at least two major institutional endorsements within hours.

The former aide's account, documented in part through contemporaneous text messages and medical records, described two separate incidents. In September 2019, while still employed by Swalwell, she said she became heavily intoxicated during an outing and later awoke naked in his hotel bed with signs she had been sexually violated, subsequently seeking medical care that included pregnancy and STD testing. A second incident in April 2024 occurred after she had left his employ.

Swalwell denied the allegations, calling them "false" and characterizing their timing as strategically motivated, saying they came "on the eve of an election against the frontrunner for governor." He added that he would "defend [himself] with the facts and where necessary bring legal action," and said his focus would be on his family.

The institutional response was swift. Rep. Jimmy Gomez, who had served as a key campaign surrogate and helped introduce Swalwell to Sacramento power brokers, announced he was withdrawing from the campaign and urged Swalwell to exit the race entirely. Gomez said he had learned "shocking information" about the congressman and could not in good conscience remain involved. The California Teachers Association suspended its endorsement the same day, calling the allegations "incredibly disturbing and unacceptable." The California Medical Association convened an emergency meeting to review its own support.

The political stakes could not be higher for a race approaching a critical threshold. Swalwell is one of several Democrats vying for the California governorship as the campaign enters the window when mail ballots are dispatched to voters. The California Teachers Association and California Medical Association rank among the most powerful organizational forces in the state's Democratic primary; their departure signals a potential cascade among other institutional backers still weighing their positions.

Swalwell's denial and threat of legal action suggest a confrontational posture rather than a conciliatory one. That approach will be tested in the coming days as national Democratic leaders face pressure to respond and as donors, rival campaigns, and potentially prosecutors assess what the documented record at the center of the allegations ultimately shows.
