Former Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax, wife found dead in home
Their eldest son called 911 after police said Justin Fairfax and Dr. Cerina Fairfax were found dead in Annandale, just two weeks before a court move-out deadline.

Weeks before a court deadline would have required Justin Fairfax to leave the Annandale home he still shared with his estranged wife, police said both were found dead inside.
Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis said officers responded early Thursday to the home in Annandale, Virginia, and found the bodies of Justin Fairfax, 47, and Dr. Cerina Fairfax, 49. Police said the couple had been separated but were still living together, and their two teenage children were inside the house when the shooting happened. Their eldest son called 911.
Davis said police had already been to the home in January for a domestic call, but no charges were filed. He said camera footage later helped investigators assess both that earlier incident and the shooting that unfolded Thursday. ABC News reported that Justin Fairfax had recently been served paperwork tied to an upcoming court proceeding, adding another layer of legal pressure to a household already marked by estrangement.
The timing has pushed attention beyond the political biography of Justin Fairfax and toward the dangers that can intensify during separation. Pending court dates, shared housing and unresolved domestic disputes can leave families in a narrow and vulnerable space, especially when children remain in the home and prior calls to police have not produced formal charges. In this case, the legal process had already advanced far enough to set a move-out deadline, but it did not arrive in time to prevent tragedy.
Cerina Fairfax was widely known in Fairfax, Virginia, as the doctor behind a private family dentistry practice. PBS NewsHour and the Associated Press reported that she had been recognized in 2015 as the Outstanding Graduate of the Last Decade by the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry. Jennifer McClellan described her as the “rock at the center” of her large family.
Cerina and Justin Fairfax met at Duke University and married in 2006. She graduated from Duke in 1999 and later earned her dental degree from Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of Dentistry in 2005. WJLA reported that she ran Dr. Fairfax and Associates Family Dentistry along Route 29 in Fairfax, and that the couple had two children.
Justin Fairfax served as Virginia’s lieutenant governor from January 13, 2018, to January 15, 2022. His public profile had already been reshaped by the 2019 sexual-assault allegations made by Vanessa Tyson and Meredith Watson, which brought calls for him to step down from the Virginia Legislative Black Caucus after the second accusation surfaced. Even so, Thursday’s events were not a political collapse so much as a domestic catastrophe, one that exposed how quickly danger can escalate when separation, court deadlines and unresolved conflict converge inside one house.
