FREEKICKS Soccer Unveiled to Create 23 Fields in Six Harris County Parks
FREEKICKS will build or refurbish 23 soccer pitches across Blue Ridge, George Bush, Moody, Alabonson, Baytown Soccer Complex and Keith-Wiess, plus more than 1,200 annual scholarships.

Twenty-three soccer pitches will be built or refurbished under FREEKICKS Soccer, a legacy initiative unveiled Feb. 27, 2026 by the FIFA World Cup 2026 Houston Host Committee that targets six Harris County parks: Blue Ridge Park, George Bush Park, Moody Park, Alabonson Park, Baytown Soccer Complex and Keith-Wiess Park.
FREEKICKS is framed as part of Impact Houston 26’s Grow the Game pillar and is explicitly pitched as expanding club soccer access to underserved youth across Greater Houston. The Harris County – Houston Sports Authority said the fields will be “strategically located in underserved neighborhoods,” and Host Committee materials describe the effort as a long-term legacy commitment rather than a one-off event series.
The Host Committee, the City of Houston and Harris County precincts 1–4 are listed as core partners, with Mayor John Whitmire and Commissioners Rodney Ellis, Adrian Garcia, Tom Ramsey and Lesley Briones named for stewardship roles in public announcements. SportsBusinessJournal identified five private local youth clubs that have committed to the program and to operating programming: Albion Hurricanes FC, Baytown Saints Youth Soccer Club, GFI Academy, HTX Soccer and SG1 Soccer Club.
The City of Houston transferred operations of Moody Park and Keith-Wiess Park to Harris County Precinct 2 as part of the rollout, the Harris County release said, placing those two sites under Precinct 2 operation to “ensure equitable access to quality fields across the county.” Host Committee and Harris County materials also note advisory input from Houston Dynamo FC and Houston Dash, credited with providing professional expertise and local community connections to shape the program.
Scholarships and organized programming are central to FREEKICKS. SportsBusinessJournal reported the program “will provide more than 1,200 annual soccer club scholarships to boys and girls in underserved communities.” SBJ added, “The scholarships will provide children who could never otherwise afford to play club soccer with the same experience as those who come from better socioeconomic circumstances.”
Partner clubs have pledged operational roles and resource commitments. HTX Soccer said it is “honored to be one of five youth clubs selected to help operate programming at these locations,” and SG1 Soccer Club described FREEKICKS as “a long-term investment in opportunity — bringing 23 newly built and revitalized soccer fields to communities across Houston and Harris County.” Alex Parra, SG1 Club Operations Director, said, “The FREEKICKS initiative aligns perfectly with our commitment to developing players both on and off the field while creating opportunities for growth through the game.”
FIFA World Cup 2026 Houston Host Committee president Chris Canetti framed the initiative as ambitious and hard-won, saying, “This is the dream version. We’ve accomplished more than we probably expected. This was the goal, this was the vision and we’re beyond thrilled that we have been able to pull this off.” HTX materials quoted Canetti adding, “FREEKICKS Soccer is our commitment to breaking down those barriers, expanding access to the game, and inspiring the next generation of players across Houston.”
Officials and club releases present FREEKICKS as an unprecedented collaborative effort, but key implementation details remain unreported. Sources have not published construction timelines, the total budget or how the 23 fields will be distributed among the six parks. The Host Committee, Harris County and the five clubs will need to disclose field-by-field plans, scholarship eligibility and administration, and the precise operational agreements that will govern maintenance and long-term program sustainability before the initiative’s ambitions can be measured against outcomes.
