Shortly after 3:30 a.m. on Saturday, officers on routine patrol near the Champs-Élysées spotted two hooded figures outside a Bank of America building on Rue de la Boétie. One of the men had just placed a device at the base of the building and was attempting to ignite it. Police moved in, detaining him on the spot. The second suspect fled.

The device consisted of a five-litre container filled with an unidentified liquid and an explosive charge made of about 650 grams of powder. The improvised explosive also incorporated an ignition system, according to AFP reporting. The building sits in Paris's 8th arrondissement, one of the capital's most commercially dense neighborhoods.

France's national anti-terrorism prosecutor's office, known as PNAT, opened an investigation into alleged terrorism-related offenses. The suspected charges include attempted damage by fire or by a dangerous means, the manufacture of an incendiary or explosive device, possession and transport of such devices with intent to prepare dangerous damage, and involvement in a terrorist criminal association.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez praised the officers' response: "Well done to the rapid intervention of a Paris police prefecture unit, which made it possible to thwart a violent act of a terrorist nature overnight in Paris." He added that vigilance "remains at a higher level than ever."

Bank of America told Reuters it was "aware of the situation" and was "communicating with the authorities." No staff injuries were reported.

A second individual who was present at the scene fled and remains at large, according to Le Parisien. Investigators have not publicly established a motive or confirmed whether the detained suspect has connections to a broader network, and authorities have cautioned that additional details will emerge as custody proceedings and the evidence review continue.

The incident lands at a moment of elevated security anxiety across European capitals. US-linked targets and Jewish institutions are among facilities European governments have recently urged police to protect more closely, and an attempted attack outside a major American bank in Paris touches multiple security vectors: protection of foreign diplomatic and economic institutions, potential transnational radicalization pathways, and the operational challenges of policing large European cities with concentrated symbolic targets. For Bank of America and other American firms with prominent European offices, the attack will almost certainly prompt fresh reviews of perimeter security and coordination with local law enforcement.
