Gio Ortega Leads Sidewinders to 2-0 Win, Return to 6A Final
Gio Ortega's bar-down strike midway through the second half lifted San Luis to a 2-0 win over Pinnacle at The Snake Pit, his 24th goal tying the school single-season record.

Senior forward Gio Ortega opened the scoring midway through the second half as San Luis High School defeated Pinnacle 2-0 at The Snake Pit, advancing the Sidewinders to the AIA 6A State Championship. The victory sends San Luis back to the title match for the third time in four years.
Ortega's goal came on a bar-down shot from outside the box that KYMA counted as his 24th of the season, a mark the report says tied the San Luis single-season scoring record. The finish broke a scoreless deadlock and set the tone for a home win that culminated in a clean sheet for San Luis' defense.
Coach Rojas credited the team's competitive practices and defensive effort after the match, saying, “They push each other, sometimes it would turn chaotic in practice, but that was great, because that's what I wanted to see. It shows the passion I'm asking from them, and it has been like that the last two games. The defense was amazing today also, and we were able to deliver up front as well.” The 2-0 result completed another shutout for the Sidewinders as they prepare for the state final.
An Instagram post circulated after the game reading, “New Record Alert After his PK goal in today's game, Rodrigo “Chano” Cordova becomes the player with the most PK goals for San Luis (since 2013).” That social-media claim names Rodrigo “Chano” Cordova in connection with a penalty-kick goal in the same match; official box-score confirmation from San Luis athletics or AIA would clarify the game’s complete scoring breakdown.
San Luis will face the No. 1 seeded Liberty Lions for the AIA 6A crown on Saturday, Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. at Mesa High School. Ortega reflected on the milestone and the road ahead, saying, “It feels great, not everyone can get to that point. I’ll keep going. Let's see how many goals I can get in the final." The Sidewinders arrive at Mesa High carrying a tied school scoring record and a defense that shut out Pinnacle as they chase a state title.
