Greensboro adjusts city services for Martin Luther King Jr. Day
City of Greensboro will close offices Monday, Jan. 19 for Martin Luther King Jr. Day; key services will run on modified schedules, affecting trash pickup and transit.

Greensboro city offices will be closed Monday, Jan. 19 in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, with a wide range of municipal services operating on holiday or modified schedules that will affect residents across the county. The city issued the advisory to help households and businesses plan around altered pickup schedules, facility closures and reduced transit service.
Residential solid waste collections will be delayed: there will be no garbage, recycling, bulk trash, yard waste or appliance collections on Monday. Monday routes will move to Tuesday, Jan. 20, and subsequent collections for the rest of the week will shift one day later than normal. The White Street Landfill and the Solid Waste Transfer Station will be closed on Jan. 19, but the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center will remain open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. that day.

Cultural and educational institutions operated by the city will pause services for the holiday. All Greensboro Public Library locations, the Greensboro History Museum and the Greensboro Cultural Center will be closed. Many Parks and Recreation indoor facilities will also be closed, including recreation centers, the sportsplex, the indoor sports pavilion and administrative offices. Outdoor amenities such as city parks, gardens, trails and lakes will remain open for public use.
Public transportation will operate on a reduced weekend schedule. Greensboro Transit Agency buses and Access GSO will provide roughly hourly service, operating approximately from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. that day, which may lengthen wait times and alter regular commuting patterns for riders.
City administrative buildings, including the Melvin Municipal Office Building and the J. Edward Kitchen Operations Center, will be closed to in-person services on Jan. 19. Water and sewer emergency services will continue to operate 24/7; city communications note that residents were supplied contact information for urgent water resources issues. All city offices and facilities are scheduled to resume normal operations on Tuesday, Jan. 20.
The holiday schedule will have immediate, practical impacts: residents with Monday trash or recycling pickup should expect a one-day delay, commuters should plan for less frequent transit runs, and anyone planning visits to libraries, museums or indoor recreation centers should reschedule. Looking ahead, the city’s return to normal operations on Jan. 20 will restore regular services, but residents are advised to consult official city channels for any last-minute updates or additional guidance.
