Grey's Anatomy nears farewell for Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver in finale cliffhanger
A bridge-collapse cliffhanger left Owen in peril as Grey’s Anatomy moved toward the season 22 exits of Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver.

Grey’s Anatomy ended its penultimate season 22 episode with a bridge-collapse crisis, a cut-off voicemail from Owen Hunt to Teddy Altman and a preview that showed Owen unconscious in a car filling with water. The setup put Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver on the edge of a farewell that will arrive in the season finale, turning a familiar medical cliffhanger into a high-stakes cast transition.
ABC had already said in late March that McKidd and Raver would leave at the end of season 22, and the show has now moved that exit into the center of its closing stretch. The finale will air Thursday, May 7, 2026, at 10 p.m. ET on ABC and will stream the next day on Hulu. For a series that has survived by rotating characters without losing its emotional core, the departures are less a single casting note than a test of whether Grey’s Anatomy can keep its long-running chemistry intact while resetting the ensemble again.

McKidd has been part of the show since season 5 in 2008, making this his 18th season. Raver first joined in season 6 in 2009, left after three seasons, returned in season 14 and has been a regular again since season 15. That kind of staggered tenure has become central to the economics of decades-old network drama: keep recognizable faces, refresh the mix and preserve enough continuity that loyal viewers stay invested even when the cast shifts.

The creative team has framed the departures as a story choice rather than simply a budget move. Showrunner Meg Marinis said their story is coming to a close but “is never truly a goodbye.” Shonda Rhimes has also pointed toward a “happy ending” for Teddy and Owen, describing their path from friends to lovers to married co-parents as “bittersweet and joyful.” Those comments suggest the series is trying to manage a familiar franchise dilemma, giving closure without shutting the door on future returns or audience attachment.

The finale will have plenty else to resolve. The hour also pushed forward Bailey’s work on an IRB issue and the firing of another doctor, adding institutional pressure to the personal danger already building around Owen and Teddy. Season 22, which premiered on Oct. 9, 2025, has run 18 episodes and included Grey’s Anatomy’s 450th episode, a milestone that underscores how much the show still depends on turning transitions into event television. ABC’s May 7 finale block, which also includes 9-1-1 and 9-1-1: Nashville, reflects the same strategy at the network level: use familiar franchises, leverage big stakes and make even a goodbye feel like appointment viewing.
