Grinzinger Heart Noses Out Zambles, Front-Running Win In G2 VRC Sires' Produce
Grinzinger Heart led all the way at Flemington to nip favourite Zambles by 0.1 lengths in the G2 VRC Sires’ Produce, lifting earnings to $198,975 and marking a milestone for sire Toronado.

Grinzinger Heart produced a gutsy front-running performance to capture the Group 2 Darley VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes, holding off favourite Zambles (Pinatubo) by 0.1 lengths over 1400 metres at Flemington on March 7, 2026, a result that immediately raises the question of whether connections will press for the Golden Slipper or a spring staying program. The Toronado filly jumped from barrier four in a ten-runner field, rolled forward to lead and controlled much of the race.
Race calls showed Ciaron Maher’s Inner Gold settling in second early as Grinzinger Heart dictated terms, while Zambles loomed alongside in the home straight before finding only enough to finish a nose back in second. Tony and Calvin McEvoy’s Expensive Taste (North Pacific) worked home to finish third, a further 1.2 lengths adrift of the leader, leaving a tight top-three separation on the line.
Trainer Ben Brisbourne praised the filly’s progression and flagged ambition after the result. “We’ve always liked her and were happy to have a go at the better races,” Brisbourne said. “I said to Craig before the race I thought she’d grown an inch in the last couple of weeks.” He also recalled a jump-out confidence booster: “Craig sat on her in a jump-out at Caulfield about five weeks ago and told me he thought she could win the Oaks in the spring… Now she’s a Group 2 winner, so there’s only one way to go.”
Jockey Craig A. Williams reflected on the change in trip and form: “Ben has done a great job with her,” Williams said. “She ran in the Talindert against the early sprinting two-year-olds and today over more ground she really delivered.” Breednet printed a longer remark praising the filly and naming longer-term targets: “Ben Brisbourne has done a great job, produced her to me one day in a jump out at Caulfield, I loved her, I just didn’t think she was quite quick enough for those early two-year-old races and subsequently she ran in the Talindert against the sprinting horses and then today she delivered… we actually targeted the horse for this race and the Golden Slipper as well.”

The victory came in only her second start, stepping up from a fourth on debut in the Listed VRC Talindert Stakes (1100m). Purchased by owner-breeder John Wheeler for $110,000 from the Lustre Lodge draft at the 2025 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Grinzinger Heart took her prizemoney to $198,975 with the Group 2 score and simultaneously delivered black-type for her dam line. She is the third winner and the first at black-type level from four to race out of the O’Reilly mare Veravarti, a half-sister to G1 winner Sharvasti and G3 winners Bhandara and Shastri.
The result also carried a sire milestone: the win made Toronado the 49th stakes winner for Swettenham Stud’s stallion and was reported as his first Australian two-year-old stakes winner. Social media posts celebrated the moment for Brisbourne’s stable, with a Facebook post and an X post describing it as a first stakes win for Ben and the team, an assertion carried by stable accounts though not yet independently verified.
Photographs from the finish were credited as “Grinzinger Hearts holds off Zambales to win the G2 Sires' Produce Stakes, Image Grant Courtney.” With black-type secured and pedigree value enhanced, connections must now decide whether to chase juvenile spring targets or to pivot toward the longer distances suggested by Brisbourne’s Oaks comment.
