Haaland faces tougher New Mexico governor race after Bregman enters field
Deb Haaland’s bid to make history in New Mexico met a real challenge when Sam Bregman entered, shifting the race toward money, endorsements and local power.

Deb Haaland entered New Mexico’s governor race with history within reach. The former interior secretary, an enrolled member of the Laguna Pueblo, launched her campaign in February 2025 and set out to become the first Native woman elected governor in U.S. history.
What had looked like a relatively clear path changed when Sam Bregman, Bernalillo County’s district attorney, joined the contest in April 2025. The open seat is being left by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, the term-limited Democrat who became the first Latina Democrat elected governor in the United States. The Democratic primary is set for June 2, 2026, with the general election on November 3, 2026.
Haaland’s candidacy carries national weight because of her past role as U.S. secretary of the interior under President Joe Biden, where she became the first Native American to serve as a cabinet secretary. In New Mexico, that profile has helped make the race more visible, but it has also invited closer scrutiny of whether symbolic breakthrough alone is enough in a state where coalition-building, local alliances and turnout matter sharply.
That shift was visible in the money race. Haaland reported raising about $3.7 million in a recent fundraising period, while Bregman reported more than $1 million. The gap gave Haaland a substantial financial edge, but it did not end the contest’s unpredictability. Other Democrats, including former Las Cruces Mayor Ken Miyagishima, remained in the broader field, and Republicans were also competing for their nomination.
Endorsements have added another layer of complication. Tribal support has not lined up behind Haaland in the way many Democrats might have expected. Sandia Pueblo endorsed Bregman, underscoring that Native identity alone has not settled the race among Native voters or tribal leaders. The contest has also moved beyond biography and into the issues that often decide statewide primaries: who can assemble a durable coalition, and who can speak most credibly to crime, the economy and basic governance.
The candidates have clashed over how to debate those questions. Bregman accused Haaland of avoiding some forums, while her campaign pushed for a policy-focused event instead of a string of direct TV debates. Filing day for statewide candidates fell on February 3, 2026, confirming that the race had already entered full campaign mode months before voters head to the polls. With New Mexico set to choose between competing Democratic coalitions, Haaland’s historic candidacy is now being tested as a race of electability, not symbolism alone.
