HBO Developing Baldur’s Gate Live-Action Series Continuing Baldur’s Gate 3, Craig Mazin
HBO is developing a live-action Baldur’s Gate series that will pick up immediately after Baldur’s Gate 3, with Craig Mazin creating, writing, executive-producing and showrunning the project.

HBO has greenlit development of a live-action television series titled Baldur’s Gate that will continue the story of Baldur’s Gate 3, with Craig Mazin attached to create, write, executive-produce and showrun the show. The series is being positioned as a narrative sequel taking place immediately after the events of Baldur’s Gate 3, which means familiar characters and new faces will be forced to reckon with the game’s consequences rather than watching the game retold beat for beat.
Craig Mazin, best known as co-creator and showrunner of The Last of Us and creator of the limited series Chernobyl, signaled personal investment in the project. “After putting nearly 1000 hours into the incredible world of ‘Baldur’s Gate 3,’ it is a dream come true to be able to continue the story that Larian and Wizards of The Coast created,” Mazin said. Hasbro Entertainment’s Gabriel Marano is listed as an executive producer alongside Jacqueline Lesko and Cecil O’Connor, with Mazin also credited as an executive producer.
The production is a collaboration between HBO and Hasbro Entertainment, with Wizards of the Coast identified as the IP owner of Dungeons & Dragons and the Baldur’s Gate franchise. Chris Perkins, the former longtime Head of Story at Wizards of the Coast, is reported to be serving as a consultant on the series to help ensure it remains rooted in D&D origins. HBO executive Francesca Orsi praised the hire: “We’re thrilled to continue our partnership with Craig Mazin on ‘Baldur’s Gate,’” and, “His deep and long-standing passion for the source material paired with his remarkable talent for building immersive worlds filled with rich, compelling characters promises groundbreaking results.” Gabriel Marano added, “The fans have been eagerly awaiting an adaptation of ‘Baldur’s Gate,’ and we could not ask for better partners than HBO and the incomparable Craig Mazin to build this world with.”
Notably, Larian Studios, developer of Baldur’s Gate 3, is not formally involved in the television production. Larian CEO Swen Vincke has engaged directly with Mazin; Vincke later wrote, “The endings of BG3 were created so they could serve as narrative soil for new adventures. There’s plenty of directions they could go. I’m eager to find out which ones Craig and his team will pick. He’s reached out for a chat so we’ll have the opportunity to tell him our thoughts.” That exchange may ease some fan concerns, but early social-media reactions include skepticism: “Not sure if I trust anyone other than Larian with those characters,” and “No involvement from Larian and Craig Mazin is crazy.”

The game that spawned this move has strong pedigree: Baldur’s Gate 3 launched in 2023, reportedly sold more than 20 million copies, and was described as the first game to win all five major Game of the Year awards in 2023. There is no Baldur’s Gate 4 in development, which gives Mazin and his writers creative freedom but also places heavy narrative responsibility on the new series team.
Production timelines, casting, episode counts and release dates have not been announced. Mazin has said he plans to reach out to the original Baldur’s Gate 3 cast about participation, but no confirmations exist. For players and Dungeon Masters alike, this is a high-stakes campaign: expect close scrutiny of how faithfully D&D mechanics, character arcs and the consequences of the game’s endings translate to television. Watch for official casting and production announcements next; those will be the real rolling-initiative check that tells whether this adaptation is a critical hit or a natural 1.
