Herbert Hoover museum reopens after $20.3 million renovation

The Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum in West Branch, Iowa, will reopen Thursday after an 18-month, $20.3 million renovation that closed the museum on Jan. 20, 2025. The Hoover Presidential Foundation put the project at $20.3 million, and the museum said the work is the first major renovation in more than 30 years, with construction photos from February 2025 showing changes in the main lobby and gift shop area.

The revived museum sits at 210 Parkside Drive on the grounds of the Herbert Hoover National Historic Site and is one of 16 presidential libraries operated by the National Archives and Records Administration. Its permanent galleries already frame Hoover through sections titled Years of Adventure 1874-1914, Years of Compassion 1914-1923, Years of Enterprise 1921-1928, The Great Depression, Lou Henry Hoover, Years of Leadership 1928-1933, Years of Struggle and Acclaim 1933-1964 and Counselor to the Republic, a sequence that reaches far beyond the shorthand that has long defined Hoover in public memory.

That shorthand is still hard to escape. Hoover remains the president most Americans associate with the collapse of the 1930s, but the museum’s updated presentation leans into the fuller arc of his life, from early ambition and relief work to the years after his presidency. The new galleries are meant to create a more immersive experience for visitors of all ages, and the renovation gives the institution a chance to show how Hoover’s reputation has been revised over time as scholarship has taken a broader view of his politics, humanitarian work and family life.

The museum’s recent special exhibitions point in that direction. Deliverance: America and the Famine in Soviet Russia, 1921-1923 ran from May 28 to Dec. 31, 2022 and focused on Herbert Hoover and the American Relief Administration’s food and medical aid during the Soviet famine. Hoover 150: A Birthday Celebration opened May 18, 2024 and marked the 150th birthdays of Herbert and Lou Henry Hoover, signaling a presentation that treats Hoover’s legacy as both presidential and personal.

When the doors open Aug. 6, the renovated museum will reintroduce Hoover not only as the face of the Depression but as a figure whose story stretches from the early 20th century into the postwar era. In West Branch, that means a presidential library built around one contested legacy will now try to present the rest of it.
