Historic Downtown Sanford Showcases 1880s Architecture, RiverWalk and Central Florida Zoo

City of Sanford’s RiverWalk now includes an approximately 3.4-mile final phase that connects the lakeside path to the Florida Coast-to-Coast trail and, by the city’s accounting, completes a 26-mile loop around Lake Monroe. The RiverWalk is a paved, multi-use trail along Lake Monroe that the city describes as transforming the lakeside into a scenic, accessible destination and earned the International Making Cities Livable award in 2009.

Historic Downtown Sanford remains anchored to that waterfront and to a built fabric dating back to the 1880s. Sanford was incorporated in 1877, and walking and architectural tours highlight styles dating to 1883; promotional copy calls it “the county’s best-known historic district and a frequent destination for Seminole County residents and visitors.” The downtown streetscape is noted for brick-lined streets, boutique storefronts, live oaks, and a significant collection of historic commercial and residential architecture.

The Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens sits less than five miles from downtown Sanford. RiverWalk parks include Veterans Memorial Park, a tree-lined peninsula honoring veterans, and Fort Mellon Park, which features a playground and a splash pad. Nearby day-trip destinations cited by tourism outlets include Wekiwa Spring State Park, about a 35-minute drive.

The RiverWalk’s development timeline is specific: the project began as a simple sidewalk idea in 1995; Phase I opened in 2004 covering 1.2 miles from Mellonville Avenue to French Avenue; Phase II extended the trail to Mangoustine Avenue in 2018; and the final phase adds roughly 3.4 miles to connect to the C2C. Some visitor materials describe the RiverWalk as a 4.5-mile paved path while city pages say it spans nearly five miles; the phase math (1.2 miles plus an approximately 3.4-mile final phase) is consistent with a total in the mid-to-high 4-mile range.
