Holiday events in nearby towns bring visitors, services to Dolores
A cluster of holiday events in neighboring Montezuma County will draw regional visitors to the area this weekend, with direct effects on downtown Dolores businesses, traffic and community services. Details on the Parade of Lights, local markets and expanded bazaars matter for residents who plan to attend, volunteer or provide services during the season.
Several seasonal events in nearby towns will have an outsized impact on Dolores over the first two weeks of December, starting with the Cortez Parade of Lights at 6 p.m. on Saturday, December 6. The parade will travel along Main and Maple streets and will include a helicopter arrival by Santa, a draw that typically increases evening foot traffic and regional visitation. Organizers and local businesses in downtown Cortez and nearby Dolores expect a boost in customers during parade hours and related activities.
Local markets and holiday bazaars offer both commerce and social support for residents. The Dolores River Brewery will host regional artists and live music with vendors on Saturday, providing another evening destination for visitors. The Dolores Community Center is staging its 33rd Annual Christmas Bazaar and expanded the event to two days, Saturday and Sunday, December 6 and 7, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Different vendors will appear each day and Santa is expected around noon on Saturday. The community center is located off Fourth Street near the Dolores Food Market on Riverside Avenue. These events fuel seasonal sales for small makers and create opportunities for local nonprofit fundraising.
Community health and public services should prepare for the influx. Increased crowds raise the usual seasonal concerns about pedestrian safety, parking and access to restrooms, and they can also increase transmission risk for respiratory illnesses among older adults and people with chronic conditions. Residents with mobility limitations may need clear information about accessible entrances and seating. The Free Children s Christmas Shop and Winter Lights at New Masters Village in Mancos, along with a Rudolph Fun Run and other family activities countywide, provide low cost or free access to holiday support for families in need.

Local leaders and health providers can use this period to coordinate traffic management, emergency response coverage and outreach to seniors and low income households so benefits from the seasonal economy are shared equitably.
