Houston Skyline Lights Blue as City Marks 100 Days Until World Cup
Houston City Hall, 1000 Main and the Bank of America Tower lit blue March 3 to mark 100 days until the World Cup; Houston will host seven matches, starting here June 14 at NRG Stadium.

Parts of the Houston skyline lit up blue Tuesday night, March 3, 2026, as Houston City Hall, 1000 Main and the Bank of America Tower marked the 100-day countdown to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Photo coverage of the event was credited to Jason Fochtman for the March 3 image, while Community Impact published City Hall photos credited to Hasan Yousef.
The World Cup itself opens June 11, 2026, and Houston is one of 16 host cities across the U.S., Canada and Mexico. Houston’s first scheduled match in the city is June 14 at NRG Stadium, and the city will stage seven matches in total, including a knockout-stage matchup slated for July 4. National Today’s coverage highlighted the tournament’s economic significance, saying the event “will bring significant attention and economic activity to Houston” and calling city participation an opportunity to showcase infrastructure and hospitality.
Operational preparations are under way. The Houston World Cup local host committee says it is running programs to renovate fields and provide scholarships for youth players, and committee president Chris Canetti offered a status update as the countdown began: "While we're all very excited for the World Cup to get here, we kind of hope time slows down a little bit so that we can get what we need to get done," Canetti said. "But right now, we're in a very good position, and we're exactly where we expect it to be."
City and stadium work is scheduled on a tight calendar. Community Impact reporter Cassandra Jenkins noted in an updated story at 12:36 PM CST on March 4, 2026, that Houston officials will begin making changes to NRG Stadium for the tournament in late spring. Community Impact also reported that Houston City Hall "will illuminate blue at night until the arrival of the 2026 FIFA World Cup tournament in June," a visibility program intended to sustain civic momentum between the 100-day mark and the tournament kickoff.

Visibility and event programming extend beyond the buildings. A fan festival in EaDo will run during the entire tournament, offering a public activation tied directly to the seven matches Houston will host. Those local activations, combined with field renovations and scholarship programs, frame a short-term push to convert global attention on the June 11 kickoff into longer-term community and youth-sports investments.
With 100 days to go, the combination of nightly lighting at City Hall, planned changes at NRG Stadium in late spring, and host committee programs positions Houston to move from visibility to operations as the city prepares for June 11.
