Hulu is leaning harder into the part of streaming that still looks economically defensible: reality franchises with recognizable names, repeatable formats and audiences that show up without the expense of a prestige drama rollout. The company used its second Get Real House Live event in Beverly Hills on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, to unveil The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives: Orange County, a new Khloé Kardashian reality project and the next season of Project Runway.

The strategy is clear. Rather than gambling on entirely new concepts, Hulu is building around brands that already carry social media buzz, celebrity pull and fan loyalty. The event was livestreamed for the first time, turning the announcements into a real-time promotional exercise aimed at viewers who already follow reality television across platforms. Scott Evans hosted the showcase, which was produced by Embassy Row, a Sony Pictures Television company, in association with Walt Disney Television Alternative. Michael Davies and Lauren Mandel served as executive producers.

The biggest franchise play was The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives: Orange County, a spinoff that moves the original series from Utah to Southern California and follows a new group of young moms. Hulu set the series to premiere later in 2026 and stacked the cast with familiar social names: Aspyn Ovard, Bobbi Althoff, Avery Woods, Salomé Andrea, Chandler Higginson, Ashleigh Pease, Madison Bontempo and McCall DaPron. The inclusion of McCall DaPron, Mayci Neeley’s sister, keeps a family link to the original cast and signals that Hulu is trying to widen the MomTok universe without losing the audience that made the first series a breakout.

That approach fits a broader industry shift. Reality and lifestyle programming is cheaper to produce than scripted series, easier to extend into multiple seasons and more likely to generate dependable engagement in a crowded market. Hulu is pairing that logic with celebrity power, using the Kardashian name, fashion competition nostalgia and established unscripted brands to keep viewers inside its ecosystem. The company has already positioned itself as a destination for unscripted fare, citing The Kardashians, Love Island UK, Dancing with the Stars and Vanderpump Villa alongside newer titles including Love Thy Nader, Project Runway, Love Overboard and Raising Chelsea.

Project Runway season 21 will premiere on Hulu, Disney+ and Freeform on July 9, 2026, extending the franchise across Disney’s platforms. The Get Real event also brought in stars from The Kardashians, The Bachelor, DWTS and other reality properties, underscoring how much of Hulu’s current growth play depends on familiar faces and repeatable formats. With the original Mormon Wives franchise already drawing attention and having recently resumed filming after a pause tied to a domestic assault allegation investigation, Hulu is betting that the appetite for reality drama is still strong enough to carry its next phase of streaming competition.
