The Golden Gate Bandshell opened its sixth season of Illuminate LIVE on March 1, drawing crowds to the Spreckels Temple of Music for a day of free performances tied to the city's second annual SF Music Week. The opening block ran from noon to 4 p.m. and featured Lucky Break, Grooblen, and Gloomy June before Crucial Reggae Sundays DJs Irie Dole, Guid8nce, and DJ Sep took the stage for an evening set through 7:30 p.m.

Mayor Daniel Lurie announced the season on February 25, framing the series as part of a broader civic cultural push. "From last summer's Summer of Music in Golden Gate Park to free concerts in Civic Center and Union Square, San Francisco is a music city," Lurie said. "I'm thrilled Illuminate LIVE is returning for a sixth season — transforming Golden Gate Park into a stage for our city's incredible talent. This season will bring energy, joy, and vibrancy to our city while supporting local artists, activating public spaces, and helping drive our city's comeback."

More than 125 free performances are scheduled through mid-November, with shows most Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, plus select Saturdays. The season's early lineup offers a cross-section of what the Bandshell has become known for: Steve Lucky and the Rhumba Bums featuring Miss Carmen Getit on April 3, an 18-piece Golden Gate Park Big Band swing dance party on April 10, the SF Neo Psych Fest with The Spiral Electric and Bolero on April 11, and a Live at the Shell midday block on April 12 with Professa Gabel, Samplov, Cynny, and Brycon. April and Monroe Grisman bring the AMG Band to the stage April 8 with Caroline de Lone opening.

That genre range is intentional. "Many times, a group of people will come for one band and stay and hear a totally different kind of music with the next band," said Steffen Franz, the Bandshell's production manager. Franz credits the diverse programming as a core reason the series has grown. Illuminate Live has turned "what was once a very dormant and beautiful space into what is now one of San Francisco's most vibrant live music venues," he said.

The numbers back that up. Organizers report more than 250,000 attendees annually, and since the series launched in 2020 as part of Golden Gate Park's 150th anniversary celebration, the Bandshell has hosted more than 700 free concerts and welcomed nearly 1 million music fans. The nonprofit Illuminate funded a 2020 renovation of the historic structure, adding state-of-the-art sound and lighting systems to a venue whose original 1900 mission was providing free music to the public.

The series is co-presented by Illuminate and the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department and supported by private funding and grants. All shows are free and all-ages. The full schedule, which is subject to change, is available through the SF Recreation and Park Department calendar.
