A Boxer named Crystal sat in the driver's seat of a vehicle in a Save-on-Foods parking lot in Nelson, British Columbia, in December 2024, one paw pressed calmly against the horn, broadcasting her displeasure to the entire shopping center for approximately 10 minutes.

Brenna Boyd had just walked out of the supermarket when she heard it. "As I step up to the car I just see this really non-amused dog in the car honking the horn," Boyd said. "And there were a bunch of people just laughing, cracking up as well." Boyd noted it seemed like Crystal was fed up with Christmas shopping and was ready to go home. Her husband posted the video to Facebook, where it attracted more than 40,000 views and introduced the world to Crystal's particular brand of impatience.

Crystal is not alone. In Ohio, a dog named Diamond became something of a local legend for honking at her owner outside a Subway restaurant; local residents commented on Facebook that Diamond had been spotted around town honking on other occasions, suggesting the behavior had become a reliable habit. Catherine Erana's Staffordshire Terrier, Grayson, needed less than five minutes to make his displeasure known. "As soon as I walked in he had already honked the horn the first time before I could even hand the lady the money," Erana told Newsweek. "I ran back inside again, I paid and before she could give me a receipt he honked a second time, that's when I started recording because everyone was laughing." In Orland Park, Illinois, an Airedale Terrier was filmed standing on the driver's seat leaning on the horn while a second dog waited patiently in the backseat. A West Palm Beach, Florida dog went viral in January 2019 after honking repeatedly outside an ABC Fine Wine liquor store; her owner noted she had "learned how to honk the horn and has been doing it non stop ever since."

Animal behavior experts say the behavior is more than cute content. Dogs typically discover horn-honking by accident, pressing the steering wheel and finding that the loud noise produces an immediate human reaction. They repeat it because it works. Psychologist and canine researcher Stanley Coren of the University of British Columbia has told the American Psychological Association that dogs' intelligence is comparable to that of a 2-year-old human, which helps explain their capacity to learn cause-and-effect associations quickly and apply them deliberately.

In some cases, the honking reflects something less benign than impatience. The ASPCA lists separation anxiety as one of the most common behavioral issues reported in dogs, and animal behaviorists note that horn-honking can be a symptom of distress rather than merely attention-seeking. A dog repeatedly triggering a horn in a crowded parking lot also raises practical concerns: prolonged noise can disturb shoppers, attract unwanted attention to a vehicle, and in some municipalities may run afoul of noise ordinances.

The pattern has repeated consistently across years and geographies, from Ohio to Illinois to British Columbia to Florida, each time drawing crowds of laughing witnesses and, increasingly, millions of views online. Crystal's 10-minute performance in Nelson may be among the most patient displays yet, but the trend shows no sign of honking its last.
