Jessie J said she was cancer free after a yearly check-up and MRI, describing the moment as one that left her “sobbed for hours” before she “exhaled for the first time in a year.” The British singer, whose real name is Jessica Ellen Cornish, shared the update on Instagram in May 2026 and wrote, “Results are in and I am cancer-free!”

The announcement closed a year marked by treatment, surgery and public uncertainty. Cornish first revealed in June 2025 that she had been diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer in late March 2025, shortly before the release of her single No Secrets. At the time, she said she was holding on to the word “early,” a phrase that reflected both relief and fear as she stepped away from performing to begin treatment.

Her recovery was not a single moment but a sequence of setbacks and adjustments. After the diagnosis, she underwent a mastectomy, then later had a second operation in August 2025 and postponed an upcoming tour. She returned to the stage in September 2025 at BBC Radio 2 in the Park in Chelmsford, a sign that she was rebuilding professionally even while medical monitoring continued.

Cornish’s disclosure also brought a different kind of conversation into view: what patients and families often misunderstand about the word “cancer-free.” The all-clear can mark the end of active treatment, but it does not erase the shock, the follow-up scans or the emotional strain that builds during months of waiting. Her reaction on Instagram, where she said she had been extremely nervous beforehand, underscored that point. The physical result may be decisive, but the psychological aftermath can linger.

That context matters for an artist who has long spoken openly about health setbacks. Cornish has said she was diagnosed with a heart condition at age 8, suffered a minor stroke at 18 and briefly lost her hearing in 2020. She has also built a major career around resilience, with three UK number-one singles, Domino, Price Tag and Bang Bang, four MOBO Awards in 2011 and the Brit Award for rising star. Her latest album, Don’t Tease Me With A Good Time, was released in November 2025.
